I have 1 142 with one litter box. When they were younger, I had three. Then, as they got older and better with box use (Fiddler and Shiloh were the holdouts), I gradually took away until I only had one. They did great, and I never have accidents anymore. <3 Outside the cage is a different matter altogether though.

I have the four ferrets in a 142 with a square superpet litterbox on the bottom right side of the shelf with the entrance facing the left side of the cage. I use thick layers of newspaper changed very frequently or aspen bedding. I cleaned the cage the other day and woke up with like 3 poops 2 behind and one beside the box and so i got a metal clothes hanger and heated it with a lighter (can also be done with stove) and pushed it through the middle back top of box and made a hole. I then put a metal shower curtain hook and have to box anchored to the cage.

I have an 141 with one corner litter box, both Beanie and Isis use it. But Isis is very picky two days of poops and she'll poo out side of it. So I put a think layer of wood pellets and change it daily.

I've got 2 FN 142 put together and I have one on each bottom level under the shelf, and one on the top level shelf on each side for a total of 4 litter boxes. I've got 15 ferrets in the double wide, plus a marshall town house with one of my other kids and 3 that I'm sitting for.. and I have one litter box per level in that.

I know this thread's a little old but for those of you with one litter box in a FN... How do you keep your ferrets from crapping on the upper level because they're too lazy to go to the lower level to poop? Mine need 2 litter boxes because of this but I wish I could just use one large one on the bottom...

Litter box boot camp for 2-3 months ;D They were restricted to the bottom level, no shelves for a month. Then they got a shelf back, covered in bedding. Finally, after another month, they got access to the top part which is a feeding area. They don't have the top shelf yet... We're getting there ;D 2 accidents in 3 months - not bad

Well I HAD 2 FN142's and a spare third level, but I was unhappy with not being able to reach the very top of the cage for cleaning, plus the casters began disintegrating from movements to clean under it and the bottom shelf allowed them a convenient spot for stashing stuff(hence the need to roll out and clean under it so often).
Soooo I separated the levels, bought some plastic storage shelves and now each single level FN sits on top of a plastic "table" which makes vacuuming underneath a breeze. 4 units are now side by side against the wall, one on another wall. I closed the ramps so they cannot climb out of course and have topped the cages with pieces of hardboard, which considerably darkens their new "caves". Each cave has its own litter box. A weekend project is to connect tunnels from cave to cave so they can all interact at will but still remain contained while I am at work.
My landlord has implemented a bug control service and frequently the guy either just shows up or only gives notice at night that he'll be visiting the next morning. So I can't let them free roam unless I am home. It sucks- because I have noticed considerable behavioral changes due to the increased cage time.
Hopefully the tunnel system will allow them to stretch their legs during the days too.
But yes, now each cage has its own litter pan. Prior to this change I DID use a litter pan on each level.
Cheers, Kim
