I've been told that a dremmel does a good job at cutting plastic totes and litter boxes... when I tried to make a litter box out of a rubbermaid bin I used a good pair of kitchen shears...if they can cut through bone and cartalidge they'll cut through plastic... I say try because once I put it in the cage with litter in it, the fuzz quickly decided that it was a great place to sleep so now instead of litter that box is now full of blankets...monsters!

I have 2 large rubbermaid bins, they each cover 1/2 of the floor level and I have 1 on each level. I have 2 ferrets and did this because I thought it would be good for litter training, but my ferrets came pre-litter trained! So I may eventually remove one, but they use both right now so I'll keep them both for now

I've got a FN 142, one ferret, and one litter box. I keep it in the bottom level so that there's only one to clean, and the top can be for food and lots of sleepy places. I'm thinking about making a square pan instead of the corner. Rip has this preference for going in the hard-to-clean end of the litter box. Apparently her old owner thought that ferrets don't need to go to the bathroom so she wasn't potty trained at first, but so far only about two accidents since she came. YAY!

In one 142 I have one regular highback litter box. Originally 4, and now 3 use it reliably. They simply aren't interested in having another in the top level. I tried it, and they kept using the bottom one, and used the top for a dig box In the other 142, I've got the levels separated for two separate groups(2 and 3 in a group). So I use the smaller cat boxes in each of those.

Thanks so much guys and gals. I really don't want two boxes... I prefer it all in one place, I'm hoping that it works for my stinker butts.

I was planning on blocking the second level if I do get the 142.

Start with no shelves, single level. Once they are using it for about 2-3 weeks no issue, add a shelf. Repeat until they have the whole cage. The goal is to build good potty habits now

I have an FN 142 and two litter boxes in it. On the top level is a small corner box and the bottom is a huge Rubbermaid container. I used to have three separate litter boxes in the bottom level but they'd poop outside of them and it was waaaaay too stinky. Switching to one big one had made everything much cleaner.

I have two 143's put together and I put them together WITHOUT the storage shelf underneath so I could get up to the top level without a ladder - I still need a chair sometimes if things are wedged in the back but otherwise it's great.
I set up the topmost level for Lulabelle for the last several months before she passed - she wasn't interested in playing with anyone because they were too rough even though they're all sisters. I kept the other two open for the other four girls.
Now I have all three sections open for the four girls. All three levels have a litter box - the topmost has the smallest/shortest one which is a Rubbermaid container with a curved lip that I found at Petsmart. I liked using that one because it was white so I could easily see if Lulabelle was having potty issues and it was a little shorter than the others for her to get in and out but still tall enough to keep most (some) of the litterin. The second level has a large black litterbox, and the third floor has the largest which isn't a litterbox at all but more of a cement mixing tub and it takes up the half the floor of one level (so one full floor space of a 143 since I have two put side by side) and it all works out well. I scoop once a day usually, but if I miss a day it isn't a big deal which is nice because sometimes I don't have time between full time school, full time work, the fraile cat, and the crazy dog plus the 3 year old human girl that is Kevin's daughter coming to stay with us.
They are very happy in their set up though =) I'll have to put up pix of it sometime

I have two on the lower section and one on the upper section, I have four ferrets, one is particular if the box has other ferret's poop in it he goes elsewhere. Three is the number that is manageable with a spot clean in the am before work and changeouts as needed in pm after work
