I really like the first one. Now one thing to consider and I've made my own cages. Is that wood and ferrets are not a good mix. These are set up in the hob room. Each cage is one level, no ramps. The entry doors are too small, they're from a ferret mansion. I will rebuild and do this again. The hardest part is the whole wood thing. Even when treated it can and does develop a fertish odour. This may not be something you want to deal with especially if it's in the main portion of your house. The hobs in my house live in their own room. This is a double caged ferret nation. The "gate" between levels is closed. This allows each of my jills to have their own space one level each. Lady Lola has the lower level and Lady Morgain (when she's in residence...she's slumming it right now and living with Tico) has the upper level. This means once again all the space is horizontal, not vertical. This is a 3 cage set up. Two FN and a critter nation in between. Once again all the space is horizontal and allows my seniors to not have to climb and negotiate ramps. Please pardon the mess....I was in the process of setting this system up and was trying to negotiate around 7 FN cages, toys and such were just tossed on top. I also have black out covers to keep the cages dark when I'm working in their room and need to use the light ciao

Hrm, Saying wood is a bad idea is making me want to lean towards getting 3 FN's and replacing some of the panels with plexiglass, like my original plan was.
And after having a half-hour long debate about this with my girlfriend (she is a bit against wall mounting, because of the extra work setting up/ moving out), we are probably getting 3x FN 181's, so that if needed we can change the configuration easily, and if we can't mount them on the wall in a future place, we can just link them together the more traditional way.

They are not mine. Just random pics from the internet when I searched "DIY Ferret Cage". The last one looks like they used parts from an actual cage.

You can't go wrong with Ferret Nations. Since they are so popular, you will find alot of ferrents posting info and different configurations, plus they have alot of accessories and again, alot of ferrents talking accessories and ideas.

Ok, cages have been ordered! Due to the fact I ordered 195 pounds of cage, plus another 25 pounds of other stuff, they are going to "contact me with a shipping quote" within the next 24 hours. Here's to hoping shipping isn't a dollar a pound!

I paid about $60 for freight shipping if I recall correctly for 2 FN 182s to be delivered together.
I would not use plexiglass except on the wall side, the other sides need to be open air (ie bars/wire) so that your ferrets don't overheat from lack of airflow. Particularly if you live in a hot climate without AC.

Still cheaper than buying from amazon for me. And for the plexiglass, I am planning on putting it on the wall sides, and the sides touching other cages, so I can allow them full access to adjacent cages without having to cut the cage or build a frame.

So I noticed today that my thermostat is directly behind where my cages will be, and lowering them enough to be below the thermostat makes the brackets for the lower shelf go through the floor. So, instead I came up with three options: Option 1: ignore the thermostat (since I very highly doubt I will ever need the thing, with how small this apartment is) Option 2: Have 2 cages level with eachother on more cheap ikea tables, and have the third one elevated still: Option 3: Just setup the cages in a row on their rollers and give up on the shelving idea (I don't want to do this though, because option 1 is the one I like the most). Note that in the option 1 image, I have still lowered the cages somewhat as my girlfriend complained she is too short to see into the top tier cage.

I got mail today! 2/3 of the cages, the playpen, and a bunch of accessories. I (mostly) assembled one of the cages to get a better idea of how I am setting it up on the wall. I put the pictures in an imgur gallery since I took a bunch, so have a look! New Stuff!

Ok!, so I got my cages (well, 2 of them, they forgot to load the last one onto the mail truck on friday), I was able to make a much much much more accurate model of the FN series cages. In doing so, I was also able to see how the plexiglassed sides would fit in place. The results: I also uploaded the models of the cages I made, found in the sketchup 3d warehouse, located here (all 3) here (181) here (182) and here (182+183)

Realized I haven't popped in for awhile, wanted to say that I have the cages, the shelves are waiting to be put on the wall, and the plexiglass will be getting cut... eventually.
However, I am kind of stuck now, as my girlfriend never got moved to full time wages, due to some problems with one of her bosses not budgeting for it (he is no longer in that company), so I can't actually afford fuzzbutts, and can't for awhile yet.

I'm glad to see you check in. I enjoyed seeing your planning and wondered what you had decided on.
I'm sorry that you have to wait for the Ferrets. Hang around though. Ferret Math is contagious and spreads thru the Forum and into our keyboards. The Ferrets may show up sooner than expected.
