Vet appointment this afternoon went as well as it possibly could have. She listened to me and we have a diagnosis of both Adrenal and Insulinoma. They've faxed a prescription in for prednisone - they had it at the clinic but because of his weight he needs such a small dose that they couldn't handle it there - the pills were crumbling when they tried to split them. So they're having a local pharmacy compound it for me... I'll go at lunch tomorrow and pick it up. I'm to keep testing his BG here at home and once it goes back to where it should be, start him on melatonin. Vet agrees with me that he's not a candidate for surgery, given his age and frailness, nor for a des implant. Depending on how things go we may try the lupron injections in a while.
Things are going well with the raw but we're holding steady. Another few days and I'm going to try slivers again.

I am so sorry to hear, but at least you have a diagnosis now. Call the vet and/or pharmacy and be certain it is PRENISOLONE, not PREDNISONE. Prednisone is hard on the liver since that is where the body converts it to prednisolone anyway. I agree on holding off treatment for now, however doing lupron after his dosage is stabilized will be needed.

It is Prednisolone - .25ml twice a day. I went and picked it up at lunch. My hubby will be happy that it was only $12.95 for 3 weeks' worth. Do you have any idea how long it will take til it starts having an effect? I don't want to have to poke him (or, more likely, trim a nail too far to make him bleed) to test his BG too often, the poor little thing.

Question... what would the best schedule for feeding be? I just saw something elsewhere on the forums that said for Insulinoma, small meals often is a good idea. I work 3 minutes from home so I frequently go home for lunch, so I could potentially feed every 4 hours or so. I'm just trying to figure out what would be best for my poor boy.

Usually it takes effect in about 72 hours. Here is how to do a home bg check: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/14617/bg-check-homeBe aware it can take 2 or 3 attempts at the beginning. When you are "pumping" the toe pad, make sure it is bright reddish purple before poking. For meals, it is going to depend on what stage he is at with his switch. You don't want him to start depending on all hand feeding if you can avoid it(believe me :face:) But if he isn't eating on his own, he may need to be fed every 5-6 hours. On raw they don't need it as often as on kibble.

Nothing new to report on the raw front. As for Draco's blood sugar, it's slowly creeping up - I'm at work and don't have the monitor with me but I believe it's gone up by about 1 point since Friday. It's still not back to normal though. I'm just going to keep going with it and hopefully a little more time will bring it back up.

It will never be "normal" just so you are aware. Insu ferrets will always read on the low side, but it does reach "acceptable" levels.

Just checking in... nothing new to report. Good to know his levels will never get back up to perfect though, I can stop freaking out. LOL.

Ohhh I'm so sorry to hear that. We're keeping steady here so it's all good on our end. I've had a lot going on the past couple of weeks so we've just kept things where they were, and another week or so and things will calm down and I will look at going to the next step with the fuzzies.

So I may have screwed us up and set my babies back to square one... I was so freaking sick this week, and out of pre-made food, so I caved and gave them kibble again. And then as soon as I got better, the rescue I got my girls from needed a ride for a rescue ferret, so I spent half of this weekend driving from here to Grande Prairie to pick up a little boy from the SPCA, and then today I drove him down to Mackenzie so Ferrets North can take care of him...the SPCA reported him as a biter but really he was just scared when he was picked up (he was a stray) and also bites when he doesn't want to go into the cage/carrier. So he is just going to be trained to have some manners. Anyways, I got off track there... while I was at the SPCA, ferret math kinda happened. There was another stray boy there, and when I asked to see him, they pulled him out of the cage and it was immediately apparent that he was deaf. Not from Waardensburg, but from something else. Anyways, I couldn't let him stay there, and since I was transporting the rescue they let me adopt him for half of the normal cost. This is my new boy... he still needs a name, not sure on that yet. And a pic of the rescue boy while he was here, just because he's pretty. I soooo wish I could've kept him. There's gonna be a bit of fighting over who gets him once he's adoptable, I think! Anyways, I picked up a fresh package of chicken thighs today and am thawing some organ meat, so I will be making a batch of soup later and getting them back to it tonight.
