Somehow Kokini managed to get this pretty nasty infection on her cheek. last Wednesday she had a spot the size of a dime and by the next day it spread. It seems to be extremely painful as she cries murder if we just look at it. it has pus discharge and looks really angry.

some kind of bacteria infection. most likely Staphylococcal. She is getting antibiotics internally and externally 2 times a day. I hope it gets better soon.

Could it have been a spider bite? hurricanekatt just moved to an area with Hobo Spiders and their bite presents like this.

But I have never seen or heard of a spider around here capable of such a bite. And for the life of me I can't imagine a spider biting a double coated breed dog like this. I was thinking that she got stabbed by a nail in the fence that was sticking out. Sent from my SM-G900V using proboards

Ouch! A few years ago, my husky got a teeny tiny little cut on the hip from a loose wire on the fence. It abscessed and ruptured and presented just like this. Tiny cut one day, dime-sized 'raw' area the next, and the third day looked like Kokini's cheek with bacterial infection. Antibiotics did the trick and it started clearing up within 3-4 days but it took almost a year for the hair to grow back.

I have had several Husky/Malamute owners tell me the same thing happened to their dogs. Can't be just a coincidence that they were all Husky/Malamutes. I hope that she does not have a bald spot on her face for a year. It is only day 2 and the scab keeps getting thicker. She keeps scratching it after I remove the Cone. So now I am only removing it for her to eat and then is goes right back on.

Poor Kokini.. Chinook wouldn't leave hers alone either. The vet told us to keep some kind of OTC ointment on it.. I forget what it's called, but like a gooey triple antibiotic ointment. He said if we could keep it soft it wouldn't itch as much and it would aid in healing, but she kept licking it off. We put the cone on her, but then she'd rub her hip against the house and scrape the scab (and flesh) off, so we ended up leaving the cone off.
I hope Kokini doesn't have a bald spot! She's a beautiful girl.. malamute or husky?

Husky about 50lbs.
we put some ointment on before she went to see the vet but she rubbed it off on our new comforter (now permanently ruined). the vet told us that the ointment will create a barrier and the infection could spread underneath it, so he gave us some spray to spray it 2 times a day. It mus burn like heck cause Kokini cries and whines the whole time we are putting it on her.

Poor baby She's about the size of our Chinook (now deceased) and almost the same color. No pictures of her on this computer but this is Kodiak, our male. (Yes, he does have a tail. He just decided he should sit on it for this picture. )
