Agreed Cindy! And a ferret room is simply not enough for an only ferret. Only ferrets need a LOT of attention or they will become bored and eventually depressed. If your wife doesn't like ferrets, then it's not like Finn is going to be out running around the rest of the house, and how often are you going to go into his room and play with him one-on-one for hours at a time? How often will you take him on walks? With a wife that doesn't want to be around them, I just honestly don't see you being able to give an only ferret enough attention. He needs stimulation that a single room just isn't going to offer. He needs a friend to enjoy the room with.

This probably sounds cruel having favorites but Finn is dearest to me, maybe because I got him as a baby, but it would be easier for me to rehome the others. Maybe Fenton and Fiona together? I'm asking around the local ferret groups and such. Well i'd love to start by saying that this makes me really sad But I am not to judge. I'd like to also put out there due to Finn being a hob... he might be a lot worse to your wife's reactions... But if i were told to get rid of the fuzz, i wouldn't do it. the fuzz were first, before my man... Though he promises to get a european poley hybrid when we move out I've trained him so well... Anyway, I wish you the absolute best of luck... hey, maybe you can hide a couple and tell her you rehomed them? i bet it would work if she doesn't go in the ferret room anyway :3[/s] I'm sorry... i didn't read This is not good, I will refrain from answering what i would like... I'm only going to say that i volunteer at a ferret shelter, i have seen this situation all too often. People with allergies don't just up and "notice" that the ferrets are causing it. She would have had allergic reactions upon entering the house /even/ in the winter months. I'm sorry. that's just not how it works.

Well a common theme I keep hearing is that the ferrets are as important as, or even more important than, our human relationships. Sorry but I can't agree with that, and I never will. My wife comes first no matter what, if the ferrets are making her unhappy then I'm going to do whatever I can do lessen that. Fenton and Rosco are in a wonderful home now and my wife is happier with 2 ferrets than 4. It's a win-win situation, my wife is happier, Fenton and Rosco are happier. But at the end of the day I'm always going to put her needs first.
As long as there is a way to keep my wife happy and keep some of the ferrets, that would be my preference. Hopefully that will be possible. She is starting to appreciate their personalities more, especially Fiona, who she likes best. She is kind of afraid of Finn but I told her that I am willing to compromise, but compromise means we both have to give a little. Her first preference would be no ferrets, my first preference would be keep them all. We rehomed half of them, and the ones that are left don't smell as much because I'm keeping the room cleaner. Hopefully this compromise will be acceptable for both of us. She actually warmed up to Fiona a lot during the process of rehoming her and then going back to get her. My wife actually thought it was best for us to keep Fiona so she would get the proper diet and care, so that is progress.

I'm glad that you decided to keep Fiona so that Finn won't be alone.

I think part of the problem is I for one couldn't imagine being in your position as I would never have been able to truly care for someone who didn't share my passion for my animals. In the second place- my ex husband always swore I'd dump him before I dumped them

I think there is hope that she could come to love them in time. She already has grown fonder of Fiona. She didn't grow up with ANY pets. She has no life experience to support being attached and bonding with animals etc. I think she could learn if I don't push her too hard. Allergy medicine is a great invention.

I'd never ever marry someone who didn't love my fur kids or at least accept that I did and supported that. My husband was not fond of their smell when we met but he has grown to accept it and now on raw it's really not bad at all. He loves Icarus now and he never thought he'd love a ferret. She knew you had ferrets before you were married regardless of the season. To ask you to rehome them now really isn't cool. When you love someone you accept them for who they are even if who they are is a ferrant and you're not fond of them. I'd rehome her personally lol

We're a bonded pair so no, no rehoming my wife lol...
She surprised me last night, I dunno what prompted this but she asked if I would bathe Fiona then let her try holding her. She actually held her for a few minutes, but she was pretty scared at first of her claws and teeth. She even watched Finn play for a few minutes (he got a bath too). She still won't go in the ferret room though, it's too strong in there, but this was progress I think.
She says Fiona is adorable Finn is scary, she won't go near him.

I have good news! My wife has been warming up more to the ferrets. I think it helps that I have been keeping their room cleaner, and the house doesn't smell like ferrets, only their room. The Bi-Odor seems to be helping too. I think she felt bad and wanted to try and compromise, and she actually suggested we go for a walk together and bring Finn. We have taken him on walks together a few times now and she laughs at his antics, especially when he goes down the slide at the playground! Last night was really special though: We had a joint birthday party for my wife and her sister, at our house. My wife's sister has 5 kids who all have been asking to see the ferrets (we now have Finn and Fiona). I bathed the two of them and made sure the ferret room was nice and clean. After dinner and birthday cake and such, we let my wife's entire family see the ferrets. First we brought Finn out on his leash, and Fiona we passed around to the kids. Fiona is 100% reliable not to bite, so she's the first one the kids get to hold. I wasn't sure how Finn would react so I kept him close, on his leash. Well, the kids went NUTS! They just loved the ferrets. They all took turns cuddling Fiona, and I had Finn do his tricks, which they loved. Their mom said she hasn't seen them that excited for a long time. A big surprise for me was that Finn ended up being amazing with the kids! He was not afraid or nervous even though the kids were noisy. In fact he seemed to love the attention. He did his tricks, and even laid on his back and let them scratch his belly. He seemed to be really enjoying the attention. Then the kids actually held and cuddled him and he didn't bite or nip anyone. There was no bottle brush tail or any sign of agitation, he was relaxed and enjoying the attention. Then we let the ferrets run around the room and I showed the kids how to play with them using a feather teaser toy, and crochet rattle eggs, and other crinkly toys. Finn went CRAZY and was bouncing around attacking all the toys, just loving having the kids play with him like that. He kept attacking the toys then rolling on his back and flailing his little paws with excitement. The kids couldn't stop laughing at how silly he was acting! Fiona got in on the action too, she was a little more shy but eventually got riled up and she started attacking the toys as well. I kept worrying Finn would nip someone by accident while being rowdy but nope, he managed to wrestle with the toys and bite them even while kids were holding them, and nobody got nipped. Really I am amazed at how well this little hob did with the kids, I expected him to get annoyed or scared or just ignore them or something. It didn't seem to matter that they were strangers / new people, he was having a blast. Fiona was a little more reserved but very gentle, I already knew I could trust her not to bite, she is very timid and gentle. I am just really impressed with the temperament of this little hob (Finn), could you ask for a better behaved hob around kids? Fiona is always gentle and cute but Finn was the star of the show with his silly antics. He seems to be calmer and more playful now that he's on deslorelin. He's starting to get a little chubby again too, not fat but no longer skinny as a rail like before, and he looks great. Even my wife's grandmother who is in her 90's and is very blunt, said that he was "a beautiful animal". We half expected her to just complain about the smell and hate them but she thought their fur was very nice and laughed at their antics. Anyway, we made a LOT of progress towards fostering good will to the ferrets with my wife and her family! I think the pressure is off now to rehome anybody else, in fact the challenge now will be resisting the kids' begging to get their own ferret

I'm glad to hear that they have a nice new home. And that your wife is warming up to the two you were allowed to keep.
I am like most others on here, in that my pets come first in my life. My OH could survive on his own and is his own person just as I could and am, but my pets were brought into the house by me and I shall take care of them until I bury them in the garden. Short of losing my house, money ect and not being able to physically care for them I would never part with them. Then there is my baby boy, he's a dog but I don't class his as a pet, he is a family member. He is the most important thing in the world to my OH and I and neither of us would ever ever ever give him up. If we lived on the street he would too, because he is happiest with us and would probably quite enjoy it haha!
