"Final Exam"
1.) You have run out of heart, how much taurine supplement should your ferrets get? (be specific)
If I run out of heart then the ferrets would get either 1.5 meals of tongue per week, or 500mg of taurine powder per ferret per day.
2.) Does freezing degrade taurine?
Freezing does not denature taurine, but heating does.
3.) How can you tell if your ferret is getting too much or too little bone?
By how firm or loose the poop is. If it is very dry and firm (starting to look like a kibble poop) then there is too much calcium, if it is loose and soft then not enough calcium.
4.) Why are cooked bones dangerous and raw bones safe?
Cooking bones alters them, so that they become brittle and splintery. Raw bones get easily digested by the acidic content of ferrets digestive systems, but cooked bones break into shards which can rip the tissues and cause serious damage to the ferret.
5.) What counts as a "different protein source?"
Different protein sources are a different species of animal (eg. Chicken, turkey, duck). Same protein source is when it is different body parts of the same species animal (eg. Chicken necks, thighs, breast).
6.) List 3 organs aside from liver.
Kidney, brain, spleen.
7.) Give 2 examples each of muscle meat, edible bones, and organs.
Muscle meat: beef, lamb.
Edible bone: chicken wings, duck neck.
Organs: pork kidney, lamb brain.
8.) Are gizzards a muscle meat, or an organ?
Gizzards are a muscle meat, because they do not secrete hormones.
9.) Is it a good idea to mix muscle meat, bone in and organs all in one meal. Explain why.
It isn't a good to mix all the meats into one meal. The first reason is, if you have multiple ferrets, then they could all be picking out their favourite pieces and end up having an unbalanced diet (either eating only one type of protein or missing out on some of the organs, or having too much of some organs). The second reason is of one of them develops an allergy or sensitivity to a type of meat, it will be harder to isolate the cause.
10.) Is it best to feed the egg whites, egg yolk, or the entire egg?
It is best to feed an entire egg for its complete nutritional content. The whites of the egg contain biotin binding enzymes, so it is best not to feed just egg whites separately. Egg yolks contain a lot of biotin to make up for the one bound by the egg whites. It is OK to feed just egg yolk separately, but best with a whole egg.
11.) How can you tell if your ferret is too fat or too skinny?
If you lift them gently by the scruff so that they hang down. They should be straight, then this is a good weight. Of your ferret is pear shaped with the tummy bulging out, then he is too fat. If the ribcage is visible and the sides of the tummy are indented, then the ferret is too skinny. Also when they are standing normally, you should be able to feel their ribs, but they should not be visibly standing out.
12.) About how long is a ferret's digestion time?
About 3-4 hours.
13.) What is a healthy diet item that can be used for hairballs, and his often should you give it?
Egg yolk or a whole egg is a good hairball relief. It should be given one per ferret per week.
14.) Is dark or white meat a better purchase choice?
Dark meat is more nutritious than white meat.
