I just want to see if anyone else has experienced anything similar to this. In May of 2013 I gave my ferret his first implant as more of a preventative. He hadn't shown any symptoms of adrenal. Then in December I started to see some hair loss, slight but still noticeable. I took him into the vet and she thought possibly he was blowing his coat and to give it some time. Well he continued to lose more hair. I contacted Dr. Jerry Murray and he told me to give him another Deslorelin implant and a Melatonin implant. I did that in March. Not only did I not see any results but he continued to lose hair. Well within the last 3 weeks he's been growing his hair back.
I don't have a ton of experience with Deslorelin, just what I've seen with one other ferret that I was fostering. I only had him a few months before he passed away. Then I've heard about results from other ferret friends. But no one I know has had such a delay in seeing hair growth results. I just wanted to check in and see if anyone here has experienced this. |

I've had a couple of ferrets who were adrenal positive who didn't get any hair regrowth until the second implant. I implant every 6 months because there are too many symptoms that we don't see and the adrenal disease becomes very aggressive if the DES is allowed to lapse. I've found that this method works best for my adrenal ferrets.

It the tumour is aggressive enough then implanting more often is really the only option.

You can't, not really. Sometimes you will see subtle attitude changes, dietary changes that might clue you in. I just found that most of my guys would show changes about 7 or 8 months (at the time the DES implants were not as easy to get) and once the downward spiral started you usually lost the ferret. It seemed that the adrenal tumours appeared to become hugely aggressive if the DES was actually allowed to "wear" off.

Mine was growing back pretty good until last couple of weeks, added the menolin or w/e it's called to help the DES and now it's growing back again.

I was under the impression that if the tumor was aggressive the des wouldn't help. Jaffa had his first implant in March. The fur on his back is a little fuller, but his tail is still half bald. We'll see what happens when he goes through his next shedding.

No, if the tumour is malignant neither the DES or the Lupron will work. Unfortunately, even the benign tumours seem to go into overdrive when the DES wears off. It's just one of the weird quirks of the drug.

I too have wondered what everyone's experience is. Zoey was diagnosed with adrenal disease 05/17/14 and was immediately implanted. I had no idea/worries that she would be adrenal (I found a highly recommended vet and wanted her bg checked... imagine my surprised when she told me her gland was enlarged!) It looked like she was getting rat tail (hair loss just on the under side) but now she has just a tuff of hair, on her tail, near her bum. Her tail isn't bald (almost like peach fuzz) but she had lost more hair on her tail. I've read some experiences in Facebook where it seems ferrents noticed hair regrowth in weeks? Zoey is scheduled to go back to the vet early September (to retest her bg; it was 106 on 06/02/14!) So we'll see how she is then. My baby girl turns 3 years old tomorrow! ♡

Oh wow.....3 is young for this! My ferret already has insulinoma and was diagnosed with it about a year before there were any signs of adrenal. What's kind of odd is that he was going bald but had a full tail of hair. Now as his body hair is growing back he's losing hair on his tail. It's so weird!

It's been 6 months since Jaffa had his des implant and his butt and half his tail are still bald.

Crystal's hair has all grown back except for a bald spot between the shoulder blades, sparse hair on feet and missing guard hairs on flanks. Otherwise her hair has grown back thick and sleek.

How the hair grows back in seems to be very dependent on the individual ferret. I have had naked ferrets regrow their coat to become full coat. I've got a few it didn't seem to work at all. Poor Fun-Go regrew 3 hairs on the end of his tail....naked right down to his butt. No fur on the top of his feet, absolutely none on his belly. Even the top of his head was naked (some of this was pred shed too as he was insulinoma). Boris' coat looks not too bad considering all the drugs I'm pumping into him and Atreyu just has naked feet (common in adrenal)
