Hi all I have used for years is warm olive oil ( warm a little in an ear dropper between your hands ) drip a few drops down into the ear and massage the ear well then wipe out the excess gunk with a little cotton wool ball ( don't delve down deep with q tips ) drip in a few more drops and massage again leave over night ( cage mates will get tongues in there and do your job for you if they can lol ) the next morning simply dampen a cotton wool ball with yet more oil and wipe again ( as deep down wax comes up over night ) the oil keeps ear skin flexable and healthy and loosens any hardened wax I clean ears every 10 days ( 7 for males as they seem to leak there brains via there ears during breeding season lol ) take care bye for now crazy lady

Well when I started this post, I didn't have a cagemate for Jude... all that has changed now, and the new girl will be getting her ears cleaned tomorrow.

they said dark wax, which I think he has but that can be contributed to not having his ears cleaned in his 12 weeks of existence. I still wouldn't count on it not being mites. Only a couple of mine who had mites had the typical dark wax. Others were reddish in colour. I seldom have to clean ears, maybe 2-3 times a year. Except for Zeus. He's got naturally dirty ears AND feet, for some reason

Yeah, he is I've mentioned it to the vet before when he goes for his lupron, and she said the adrenal might have something to do with it, but doesn't know for sure. With his feet, it's the TOP that always looks grungy for some odd reason.

Sherry the excessive earwax is from Adrenal disease. Intact males also produce more earwax

I second that intact males really do produce more gunky wax lol especially in breeding season lol ( for really hard wax build up you can use almond oil too ) Sherry do the top of his feed look an orangy brown ? and it appears from around feb to september ? take care bye for now crazy lady

Actually, they look like a little kids feet do when they've been running around outside barefoot ;D More blackish/brownish than orangy. It looks like dirt And yes, it is more common then. Though not quite that long.

A few of my Adrenal boys also had more dirty feet. A ferret's front and back paws, feet and ears always smell more "ferrety" than the rest of their body. Have you ever smelled your ferrets front paws? They smell like fried corn chips. So I think they probably produce more oils around their feet.
