I came home today to my 3 year old male coughing a bit so I checked on him and he almost seems to be wheezing but only occasionally and I don't know if I am just panicking but I almost think his neck is a little swollen. I instantly called the vet but they referred me to a emergency vet which I would like to avoid. I almost suspect allergies, he was sleeping in the hammock I just got, but in all other aspects he seems fine he is hyper and alert and his mouth is a nice pink. I am thinking of maybe giving him some baby Benadryl just in case, but I am keeping a very close eye on him and am ready to go to the vet if needed!

Check him over for a spider or insect bite, but chances are he just has a little fur caught in his throat. Its Spring and everyone is busy grooming themselves and they tend to swallow a little fur. Try giving him a little oil and see if the coughing stops.

I have seen some discussion on coconut oil, but I'm not familiar with it (except for tanning at the beach, sigh). I would use a little vegetable oil, put a little in a dish and let him lick it. If he doesn't take to it, add some warm water.

I went though a similar thing a while back with Taz and Bleu. Taz was an unknown allergic reaction it cleared up with 1/8th tsp of coconut oil twice a day after a couple of weeks. Taz was contantly sneezing. With Bleu it turned out to be pneumonia. Bleu was making strange noises and coughing. It was caught early before too much build up of fluid in the lungs. Antibiotics cleared it up within a few days.
either way I would have them seen if it does not clear up in a day or two, to figure out what is wrong.
