How many hours is a whole duck wing good to keep in the cage? I put one in this morning and they seem to still be happy gnawing on it even though it's dinner time. They ate about a third of it.

I leave food out for about twelve hours. They will not normally eat rancid meat. Are all of them eating bone in meat now?

Yes, they are eating bone if it's small enough. And eating around the bone if it's too thick. I ended up leaving the duck wing last night instead of giving them a new meal, and they have eaten all the tip, and some of the meat around the thicker bits. I'm going to try and see if they'll take split chicken wings today. I'm wondering if they'll be more inclined if i break the bones. Another question: When introducing quail, should I go from the beginning and cut it into tiny pieces or soup? Or do you think quail is close enough to chicken that they might just take to it immediately?

The split chicken wings are a success!! All I did was attach five pieces onto the wall of the cage individually with shower hooks. One of the pieces has already been eaten (bone and all!) and I didn't even have to smash them or anything. The hooks seem to be working well to eliminate stashing and rotting.

Whole hearts, another success I was so surprised to see Jack immediately grab and devour three entire chicken hearts. Jill and Alice took some convincing, but they went for it too. I'm so excited! They are eating whole pieces! Feeding is about to get a lot easier for me (giggle)

You're doing exceptionally well. The quail should be accepted in the same manner the bone in chicken was.

They reluctantly ate about half the quail. I feel confident that we are towards the end of our switch. I'm planning on getting a couple of mice from the pet store this week; what size would you recommend starting with? Should I get pinkies and slowly shift to adults, or do you think they would accept adult mice right away?

Stat 'em out with pinkies and work your way up.

Woops, my mom says absolutely no frozen whole prey. It's her house, so I can't really argue. So it looks like we've reached my goal of feeding large pieces of chicken, beef, turkey, pork and quail! Am I ready to graduate?

Taurine - Does freezing degrade taurine? Bone - Are cooked bones safe to feed? Variety - What counts as a different protein source? Organs - Organs should be how much liver and how much other organ? Balance - Are gizzards a muscle meat or an organ? Health - How often does a ferret need to eat? General - Are leaner meats better for your ferret or fattier meats.
