I would. He really needs them. Poor fuzzer, give him extra hugs from me. Perhaps try calling the office perhaps so you don't have to go in for a whole new visit. There should be no reason for you to have to pay another exam fee when you were just in there. I just don't understand why he is refusing antibiotics. I can't say I have ever met a vet so unwilling to treat diarrhea and clear symptoms of pain with a round of antibiotics, much less refusing to treat a ferret with obvious, CLASSIC ulcer symptoms. I mean he SAW The ulcers in his mouth right? Even if the ulcers are being caused by the pred, they still need antibiotics. Ugh. Sorry, venting my frustrations a bit here, probably not all that helpful. I just hate hearing that you baby is in so much pain when he doesn't need to be. Antibiotics are so simple to prescribe... (headwall) Whereabouts in Michigan are you? I can ask around and see if anyone has any vet recommendations.

He actually didn't have any mouth ulcers this time--maybe that's part of why the vet doesn't believe there's ulcers? But I showed him pics of the dark poop and told him about the tooth grinding, so I don't know. I live in Grand Ledge, MI and the vet I go see is in Dansville.

Maybe, but the poops plus tooth grinding should have been enough, not to mention the known history of mouth ulcers. I'm investigating to see what I can find for other vets - I'll let you know if I find anything. In the meanwhile maybe a phone call or stopping in and really pushing hard for some meds might get you somewhere...

I'll definitely call. It's like a 40 minute drive one way so I'd like to avoid making a trip out twice in one week.

As for other vets, so far I have been given this info to contact Dee. I sent her an email but it might be worth you giving her a call yourself since you are obviously more familiar with you area and driving distances and such: Dee has been there longer so may have more insight on the vets. His weight was right at 1kg. He doesn't seem to be eating much unless he's in my lap. I'll call the vet when he gets in at 9.

Dr. Seager www.eastsideanimalhospital.net/Dr. Fear www.aaccvet.com/And the response from Dee: I can certainly give you a list of ferret knowledgeable vets in GR; however, Grand Ledge is closer to Cedar Creek Veterinary Clinic, 2295 N Williamston Rd, Williamston MI 48895. Wayne Beasley DVM & his staff are very good. In fact, that's where Staci Lombardo takes her ferrets. Phone: 517/655-4906. Happy to help ...... Dee WMFC

I'm glad his energy is good and he is eating okay, though it is definitely sounding like he is having off and on days? If he is eating the slivers well, you can either spend a little time workog on gettig him to eat it on his own, or increase the number of slivers again. What ratio of slivers to soup is he at now?

The vet suggested takin Remus off carafate because that might be what's upsetting his stomach.

Definitely do Not stop the carafate. I helps coat the tummy to prevent further acid damage and hopefully give it a little protection to heal. I would check out those other vets. Untreated ulcers can perforate and lead to very serious anemia if not treated, and in a little animal like a ferret anemia can kill. I am absolutely astounded at this vet... I have never heard of a vet ignoring such obvious ulcer signs, much less a vet who won't at the Very Least Rx some antibiotics for the loose stools. Ulcer symptoms really don't get any more obvious than Remus' symptoms. Classic signs of ulcers include tooth grinding (esp when eating), and dark tarry stools. Along with weight loss and/or loss of appetite, and decreased energy.

He also said he would all back about potentially starting antibiotics but that was like...7 hours ago. Very much not impressed.
