My ferrets live in my bedroom and overall everything is very safe for them. Until Jill discovered she liked to dig at the bottom of my mattress! I've tried to stop her with bitter apple spray and nothing works; she even started getting bits of foam out of the mattress.
I'm in a pickle. My bed is queen sized so I can't possibly find a plank of wood that large… For now I've put a fitted sheet at the bottom to (hopefully) deter the digging but I know that's only temporary.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

You might consider getting some chicken wire from Walmart or Lowe's (or whatever equivalent is near you). You can use wire cutters or have them cut it in the store and then the weight of your mattress should hold it down, while the metal grates will keep her from being able to tear into the mattress on the other side. You may need to overlap two sheets of chicken wire to get full coverage. Never tried it before, but it sounds like it should work. Good luck!

I just had to fix my box spring as the ferrets tore thru the material. What I did was take a bed sheet and nail it tight along the box spring. This work for us. I hope this helps

The bedsheet might work. It has for others. If not- you might wind up just putting the box spring on the floor!

I'm thinking about maybe trading bed frames with my sister; hers is quite tall and they definitely wouldn't be able to dig under it. But I want to try other options first because our bed frames switched would look weird with the rest of our furniture which all matches haha! Anyway thanks for the input guys

"How?" and "Why?!" are questions I find myself asking every time I see ferret shennanigans. Usually 'why' before 'how'.

Though the Ferrets didn't like it, as it took away all that space under the bed where they liked to hide and play; oh well, because at the same time I also started letting them explore a whole additional room; and having the box spring flat on the floor has also made it more difficult for them to reach the bed side tables and dressers; thus less things knocked onto the floor!

I had my premium mattress on the floor when she was a kit, I been sleeping on the floor for over a year now after she completely destroyed it and got tired shaking her out of the springs. She always managed to get under the undersheets to dig at the mattress no matter how good I tucked them in. Nailing sheets is yuck, as the sheets get dusty even when using other sheets over them. If you want to nail sheets make sure it is high thread count (over 1000) to make impossible for them to scratch through.

You could just get particle board or plywood to cover the bottom.

Get some heavy fabric and tack it to the bottom of the box spring. Alternatively, yes you can get pieces of wood big enough (very easily actually). Most hardware stores will also cut it for you to fit. MDF or really thin plywood would work.

I think I'd be looking into canvas, denim, or duck cloth at the fabric store if I were going to nail it.

I have my box spring on the floor. If you do that you can sell your bed frame and buy more ferret toys!
