Are two month old kits fully on their own? I saw several small kits at a pet store and one of the employees told me they were a little over two months old.

They probably shouldn't be, but that is a common age to see kits in the store. Each of mine were adopted at right around that age.

I got mine from petco, When I got Nax, according the pamphlet they gave me stamped with his birthdate to get his birth certificate from marshals, he was only 5 weeks. Barely over a month old. He was so tiny compared to Nixxie who is super petite. Now it is the reverse, she looks super tiny compared to him. It is amazing when I go into my local petco now and see how tiny they are. They have rats bigger than their baby ferrets. I have a feeling his young age is why Nax has a sucking habit. He'll suck on blankets, the tip of my nose etc.

Ideally they shouldn't be separated from mum til a MINIMUM 10 weeks of age. Not going to happen with pets stores. In most cases the younger the better for them

That's so sad I really do disike pet stores and their drive for $$$. Seriously, wouldn't you step back and say, "Hey, what I'm doing...it isn't so right." Sick...

Its actually not the pet store's decision. Marshall's just ships them whenever an order is placed.

Yeah, this was Petco. They had a standard sable and a blaze. They are tiny, and so playful.

I know when I got Alice 5 years ago she was only 6 weeks. Is it just me, ore are pet store ferrets actually bigger/older than that now? Last month I saw a couple chocolates at Petco that were Yoshi's size, and he's almost 2.

No, it's luck of the draw. They're shipped in an allotted time frame. Unfortunately, that makes some just about old enough and many no where near old enough. It's heartbreaking and their losses are high (failure to thrive) but it's well worth the cost to send them out that young. People fall for the "babies" and ferrets don't remain babies long enough. Even ferrets a couple of months old will be passed over by the "target market" for the tiny little ones ciao

When I got Rolo from a petstore, he was 3 months old, and had been there "at least a month or more" according to the employees. Even though I totally fell in love with Rolo, I still regret getting him from such a shitty store. They sell mill puppies & kittens and it's a teeny tiny mall location. At the same time, that store didn't restock any ferrets for a long time after that (whenever I went to that mall I'd check - it was the better part of a year until they restocked) because Rolo took so long to sell. And I know why - he was a pent-up-bitey-maniac at the store - which is ridiculous because he's actually the sweetest little fuzzball you'll ever meet.
Even if you're going to buy a petstore fuzz, I think it's better to support the stores that take proper care of them.

Rolo is so cute. I do hate to support pet stores that don't properly care for their ferrets. On the other hand, I want everyone to get a good home and those little ones really need us.

I have noticed something in regards to ferret in pets stores. Mind you I live in california so I have to drive pretty far to see them. I first saw them in Reno pet store they request them 8 weeks of age. I have seen them younger. I got Koufos there he was small and was not even eating kibble. I had to hand feed him formula for a week and got him onto soup before switching him to kibble. He would have surely died, no pet store is going to do all that for a sickly ferret.
When I went on a road trip to Washington state I noticed that all the ferrets in pet stores were so big. When I asked their age I was told 4 months. I asked why so old, the guy said that is they way they send them. On the way back we stopped off at a co-op pet store in Oregon. They were 6 months old there.
Then last year I went to Oregon, We noticed that most of the ferrets available were large. We at that time bought Mogwai and he was 4 months old.
Later I went back to Reno and again they were 7 weeks old.
So I am not sure if they are the pet store preference or if the state has anything to do with it, but very consistent.
Too sum up my experience.
Washington state 4 month old, could not find any younger that that at any pet store (visited petco, petsmart)
Oregon 6 months to 4 months old. could not find any younger than that at any pet store. (visited petco, petsmart, Pet emporium)
Reno, Nv 7 weeks old could not find any older than that in any pet store. (visited petco, petsmart, pet supermarket)

I went to a Petco in Roseburg Oregon and they told me 11 weeks. That was the youngest I saw in Oregon. This was last June. The same ferrets were there when I went back 6 weeks later. I wonder if it is that they just aren't selling.

I'll have to ask, the next time that we go into Petco. My Mika came from a local pet store and she was about 8 weeks old. When I have been in the Petco in Hendersonville, and Murfreesboro, they are usually a little older. I haven't seen any little tiny ones in Bowling Green Ky, but we don't go, very often.
