So I know many of you give your ferret vitamins, I have these Omega 3-6-9 vitamins I use to take for when I went to the gym, since moving I no longer have a gym within an hour of me and they are just sitting here.
Would they be beneficial for Jude? They are gel caps with Flax, Fish, & Borage Oils. I can describe the label a little bit...
The label says that it's purified to eliminate mercury.
The label claims it has none of the following; artificial color, sweetner, preservatives, sugar, starch, milk, lactose, gluten, wheat, yeast, shellfish and it's sodium free.
What do you think? How much is enough?
Also for those of you who use oil supplements for nail trimming and the likes what kind of oil do you use? Jude needs his nails clipped and I have nothing to keep him still long enough!

Jennifer (mustelidmusk) would be a great person to answer this question. She has a wealth of knowledge about supplements and which are okay/not okay. My concerns about this are the flax and the borage oils. I know some ferrets are sensitive to flax seed oil, and it makes them very itchy. Others have no issues with them. The flax (someone correct me if I'm wrong) acts lke fiber and helps slow food down for better absorption. I did a quick search on the borage oils, here's what I found "anti-inflammatory, for treating arthritis, as well as certain skin conditions (e.g. atopic dermatitis) and respiratory inflammation" Reminds me of Reshi (supplement used). Sounds like it would definitely be beneficial for a fuzz, but I have no idea if that is safe for ferrets holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthresource&action=display&thread=199 holisticferret60.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=healthresource&action=display&thread=867Both of those threads talk about supplements. As for what I use for nail trimming, I use extra virgin olive oil. It is a daily treat here to help prevent hairballs. It is also suspected to help protect against Helicobacter Pylori which causes ulcers in our furbabies.

Hmm I'll have to pick up some EVOO then for Jude, I just have vegetable oil around the house atm as we just moved and need to restock on everything of that sort.
I know we use to feed our horses and dogs flax, but yeah, I'm not sure if it's good for ferrets.
Borage oil I've never heard of till I started taking these, it was suggested by my personal trainer for recovering after a hard work-out.
I wonder where I could find more information on supplements for ferrets. Thanks for the links, I had read one of them somewhere on here, but the other is new, I'll hop along and read it now, thanks Jackie!

I use olive oil, Salmon oil, or fish oil pills (which I poke a hole in and squeeze the stuff out for them to lick up so that they can't eat the capsule). I also use FerretVite. I know it is sugary but they love it so much and is great for convincing Koda to eat things...like medicine, Vaseline if he's giving me a blockage scare....etc. Also it has taurine in it, and as Koda is allergic to beef, and sensitive to chicken he doesn't always get quite as much heart as I'd like so the taurine in the FerretVite helps to put my mind at ease in that regard.

Katt, does your ferretvite list taurine as an ingredient? Mine doesn't so I was unsure if it contained any

Yeah....I think so.... I remember seeing it say "plus Taurine" or something like that on the frog but I didn't look at the actual ingredient list...

Ahh, I see. I have the liquid ferretvite and it doesn't have taurine in it

Check the label. I don't think there is a liquid FerretVite. Sounds like FerreTone to me. They are different. I could be wrong but I believe the Vite comes in treats or paste. Unless perhaps you have a different brand....

Ohh Vita-Sol is different than the paste she has. I always thought Vita-Sol was like an electrolyte... I should research that.

Yeah the Vita Sol is different. It's meant to be put in their water. The paste is more of a treat type supplement.

Eh, I've never used it (petstore forced us to buy it when we got Trixie). I just use a taurine powder supplement

Personally, the only supplements I use for the majority is fish oil(except for the nails- it's a mix of 'tone and EVOO ;D ) and pumpkin for fiber. Boris has IBD, and gets(when I can get it INTO him ) reishi mushroom for anti- inflammatory effect, pancreatic enzymes to aid digestion. Probiotics for good gut flora, and slippery elm bark syrup to soothe his digestive tract. He also gets a wee bit of cod liver oil once ever couple of weeks since I can't get much liver into him. He can't have chicken at all, and refuses most other liver.
