hey there my almost 1 year hob ferret has recently started this weird strange noise whenever he wants to come out of his cage. He sticks his tongue through the cage bars and its like a strange heavy breathing followed by pawing the cage door and it just keeps on like this....is this a normal? or some kind of attention behaviour? or something serious?? please help

A video would be the best way to help figure it out, if we could hear the noise. How often does your little guy get to come out and play?

im going to try and get a video at some point but i dont have an iphone so its not easy for me to just upload one unfortunately he comes out twice a day without fail (morning and evening) and is allowed to run all over the house, i even take him into the garden or outside for walks on the lead, i have another hob who lives in a separate cage that comes out as well and they play together, but i dont get any trouble from him when it comes to scratching...also when i say cage its not the typical wire cage its a wooden rabbit hutch.

Is he intact, and is he in rut?

yes his intact and yes i suspected that he was in his first rut, thats the reason ive had to separate them both because they kept fighting and showing certain signs like pinning each other down for hours and rubbing themselves up on places...

This is not a very good recording of the sound but this is Tico, telling everyone that he's not allowed to be with friends and I'm starving him. Is this the noise you're talking about. He usually is much louder about telling everyone how he's abused but I think he got camera shy. If you listen carefully you will hear him talking ciao

hey heather what a cutie! thanks for the video but no thats not the sound its more like a panting, strangely like a dog. He will stick his nose and mouth up against the bars showing his teeth and then sticks his tongue through the bars almost like his licking the bars whilst heavily breathing at the same time and then he will stop and paw the gate again. He'll repeat it until i come to let him out. also im still trying to work on getting you guys a video, my other half is away at the moment with the camera so im waiting on him to return! so thanks for being patient with me

No problem....It sounds to me like a get me out of here now pant. A video would be nice to confirm though. Hobs have the widest range of vocalizations I've ever heard, it's really quite amazing. The jills have a huge range as well but the hobs amaze me. For a creature that is touted as a silent "pet" they're sadly mistaken. ciao

He is such a big Handsome boy! My boys have never made that much cute vocalization, they are neutered maybe that's why? I hope you will join the forum and we will get to know both of your boys better. (dance)

Koufos does this he will scratch at the cage bars, then chew on the cage bars then he will do a loud huff huff huff. normally in three. then he will start it all over again. He is the only one of my ferrets that will demand to be let out.

I will try and post video of Koufos doing it as well. however He is now 4 years old so he does not do it that often. ironically he did it today, he actually has not done it for months.
