Given that my cat, Sasha, will jump through flaming hoops to get a chicken gizzard, I'm definitely going to try them for River! LOL I can't find a source for just hearts, been looking, but I can get a pound of gizzards and hearts quite cheaply. I'll just save the hearts for River and give Sasha the gizzards.
What about Cornish Game Hens? Has anyone tried feeding those? (in my area, they're pretty cheap, and I'd think since they're smaller the bones would be more manageable)
So I gather from reading here that beef is okay for them. What about beef liver? I love the stuff, and if I can share with my furkids when I fix it for myself, Hurray!

So i found a supermarket that does carry chicken hearts but they were out, I read somewhere else on here that brain is also a great source of the taurine that they need from the heart, also read to feed in moderation since it is an organ. Is it okay to use the brain as a substitute until they have hearts??

No more than 2 oz of organ should be given a week. So yes it CAN be used to supplement. However it does take a few months for deficiencies to show up, so if it's only going to be a month or so it's fine

Ok thanks, what would be some signs of taurine deficiency?

Great list, I'm still calling around trying to find a store that sells organs... the whole percentages thing confuses the heck out of me still. I need to steal someones weekly food list.... hehe (idea)

There IS a menu at the top of this page I'm also terrible with percentages which is why I go by X number of bone in meals, etc

You know what your best bet is? Print out the first post with the menu and meat varieties. Take that with you and hit every store and butcher shop in your area. Check every meat counter and meat freezer for what is on the list. Tick them off as you find them. That way you can also speak to any meat managers or butchers then and there and ask what all on this list they have or can get in.

I'm guessing from what I've read already that lizards would also be ok to feed. Am I right? I'm gathering up info. for now but I have 2 ferrets 1 male which isn't liking anything excpt chichen jurky right now and 1 female that will will take one baby spoon full of chicken baby food.

It does take a while to convince them raw is meat. And I don't see a problem if they catch the odd lizard, as long as it's non toxic. Read through the diet archives for various methods of switching them And apply for a mentor! There is a bit of a waiting list, but that just gives you more time to do some research

I went to the store to get chicken hearts and liver. Found a package of gizzards with hearts. Made their first soup with chicken breasts, gizzards and hearts. What are gizzards, are they good for my ferrets? And what do they qualify as in their diet- muscle, organ, what?

Gizzards are a muscle meat. And they are fantastic at building jaw strength toward chomping bone. Also consider them as natures rubber and as such well received by most ferrets lol

Shaylee seems to be ready to move on to slivers of meat as does Kiki (there were some small 'chunks' that didn't get ground up by food processor) but the other three still need some convincing to eat the soup. Is it ok to go at different rates or should I stuck to the soup til they are all ready to move on? Also with chicken wings for bone do you just offer the whole wing? And at what stage in the switch can I offer a wing to them?
