We have made so much progress with the soup and pork. Last night, right after I turned out the lights, Juliet got up and wanted Dinner. She ate a good size portion of the soup and had a few pork slices. This morning, everyone was up and playing. We came downstairs and everyone finished off the rest of the soup, ate some pork slices and then everyone tasted two Quail eggs. The soup from last night, is all gone and most of the pork slices are also gone. (dance)Great! Want to tackle beef next? (Besides the duck and whatnot). It can take longer since it is more strongly flavored, but the vit B from the red meat is important. Start by mixing little beef slivers into their other chunked meats and increase the beef gradually. You can always try just giving them a piece to see what they think too - never hurts to skip ahead if they will allow it. Tonight's dinner will be a little pork/pork brains and some liver.
How did that go? Tomorrow, we will start the Duck. 1. I will offer the crushed bones, every other day. So, tomorrow will be Duck wings and I should crush those with the cleaver, right? I bought 4 Duck wings, so I will put out two wings.
2. Since I don't have enough duck for soup, I will offer chicken soup with liver at night. The soup will be three times a week, now. So, Tuesday-Thurs-Sun of this week will be liver/soup.Start out by smashing them SUPER well. Think Pulverize! A meat mallet would serve you well in this - I use my Ulu. Hammer, meat cleaver, etc etc. Smash the bone to bits, then use knife or scissors to cut the resulting pulp into chunks of a size they are familiar with. You may have to hand feed some of the bone slivers. This is the really labor intensive part since the bone smashing can be hard on the hands. The more you push them on the bone though, the sooner you will be done needing to smash them up all the time. I have been leaving food out 24/7, I will start putting out food at the same time every day. then pick it up after an hour or so, or when I have made sure everyone has eaten.Good, Keep leaving the food out 24/7 - that is good. You just mentioned being woken up at odd hours by hungry ferrets so I thought maybe you were removing the food between meals. I would love to be able to feed you, I have a huge Need To Feed. I thought that after the Air Force, I might like to work in the food industry. I took a semester of Cooking School and discovered that while I love food, I like dressing up and going into a lovely restaurant, much better than working in a hot, steamy kitchen. I'm also suppose to be on a Gluten Free diet, but took a short break to reward myself for spring cleaning. April 1st is back to the GF, bathing suit weather is right around the corner.Mmm food. lol Just an FYI, there is no benefit to avoiding gluten if you don't actually have a gluten intolerance/allergy/disorder. (If you do that's clearly a different story). The benefit people typically get is from avoiding the processed foods, not gluten. Many Gluten Free Foods are actually a lot worse for you than the "real thing" because without the gluten the food becomes less flavorful so they pack them with fat and sugar to compensate. Most gluten-free foods are low in nutrients as well so if you are eating a lot of supermarket gluten free foods and not a good variety of fresh foods you can end up with vitamin deficiencies and stuff. Avoiding processed foods and eating fresh foods I fully support. Avoiding gluten specifically doesn't actually do much for you though. It's the same as Adkins no carbs and all of those other diets. Avoid processed crap, eat lots of fresh veggies, fruits, and meat. That's the real key. (dance)

Good Morning (wave) First, I wanted to ask you, how do you do those quotes? If I use the quote icon, then I get the whole post. If I try to copy and paste, I also get a line of code. Last Night's Dinner: Yesterday, I was reorganizing the freezer, watching a movie and cooking Thai food for dinner. I accidentally refroze the brains. (shy) So, dinner was a repeat of pork slices and soup. It went quite well, everyone ate alot. No one jumped on the bed and asked for an FDR treat, in the middle of the night. (dance) Breakfast: Continuing along with yesterday's brain freeze/senior moment, the duck wings were actually pork tongue. That will teach me to be so neat. (giggle) They loved the pork tongue and everyone ate alot. I sliced the tongue into tiny pieces, big pieces and chunks. It didn't matter, they ate it all. Then everyone ran around and played, and an hour later...they all wanted a second breakfast. I whipped up a big batch of soup and everyone had a good 1/4 cup each. I weighed everyone, this morning. Roamy is looking very lean. He weighed in at 2lbs 4.6 oz. Juliet is bulking up, I think she has her seasons backwards. We will see. She weighed in at 1lb 12.8oz. Mika is still super fluffy and soft. She weighs 1lb 15.2 oz. Wynstan is also super fluffy and soft, in his first winter coat. He weighs 2lb 13.2 oz. Tonight's dinner is definitely Duck Wings. (I checked twice) I will smash them up super good, per your instructions. Hand feeding is very popular here. I will make sure they all try some. Beef: Tomorrow, we will try some beef. Leaving food out 24/7: I'm very happy to leave food out. I like knowing that if someone needs a snack, they can have one. Agree Gluten Free: Yep, I don't have a real intolerance. It's just a cheap diet trick, to convince my brain that it can have anything it wants, except for one thing. I did Atkins after my first pregnancy and usually I avoid sugar. I lost my yoga center, when we moved here and then I learned to bake. Tennessee, Baking and No Yoga have not been kind to my figure (shy) I hope your week is going well. Give Koda and Kenai, a big hug for me. :thankyou: Stef

Good Evening (wave) I just popped in to say that Wynstan ate some duck for dinner. I pounded the heck out of it, with my cleaver. Minced it into tiny pieces and then cut them into smaller pieces. Wynstan got up, about an hour ago and ate quite alot of the duck wing. (dance) I was rather nervous, it seemed so "pebbley". We will see if anyone else gets up and has some dinner.

Good Morning (wave) The crushed duck wing is almost all gone. I have seen Wynstan eat quite a bit. Roamy easily ate some, and Juliet ate a few bites. Mika hasn't asked for breakfast yet. I had quite the scare with her yesterday. We were gathering up garbage bags and breaking up some boxes (well played with and ready to be discarded). The girls were playing in the bags and helping us, and we were super careful with putting the bags outside. Around 9:00 p.m. I started to check and make sure everyone was in bed and realized that I had not seen Mika for awhile. I checked the dresser, no Mika...checked her couch, that she likes to sleep in and still no response. I was sure that she wasn't put outside in a bag, but still worried. Around 2:00 a.m. I got up in a panic and started searching for her. Roamy and Juliet woke up and I sent Juliet into the couch, to look for her. Sure enough, she was in there. Talk about anxiety! She didn't want dinner, and instead got a FDR treat. (shy) I know, I know... This morning for breakfast, everyone ate a little more duck wing. Then Wynstan and I went for a walk. When we came back inside, Wynstan ate some pork slices with a quail wing on top. I also crushed a chicken neck, that I cut out of a chicken, that Paul and I are having tonight. Juliet ate some of that and stashed a few pieces. For tonight's dinner, I took out a little beef liver. I will make a soup with that and some pork slices. We'll see how everyone likes that. :thankyou: Stef

The crushed duck wing is almost all gone. I have seen Wynstan eat quite a bit. Roamy easily ate some, and Juliet ate a few bites. That is great! (dance) Did you see all 3 of them crunching on bones, or just meat? It's really important to make sure that everyone is eating the bones so we don't leave anyone behind as we progress forward. Mika hasn't asked for breakfast yet. I had quite the scare with her yesterday. We were gathering up garbage bags and breaking up some boxes (well played with and ready to be discarded). The girls were playing in the bags and helping us, and we were super careful with putting the bags outside. She didn't want dinner, and instead got a FDR treat. (shy) I know, I know...Another reason I will never be able to free roam! Yikes! I know free roaming is best but there's so many places in a house that they can get lost. How scary - I am so glad that you found her and she was okay! And yes here is your obligatory tsk tsk on the freeze dried treats. Next time hand feed her some bony duck bits. She won't learn to eat the new healthy stuff if mommy is always caving in and giving her her favorite treats. Were they crunching on the bones? Good little fuzz. For tonight's dinner, I took out a little beef liver. I will make a soup with that and some pork slices. We'll see how everyone likes that.Beef liver is more strongly flavored than chicken liver, pork is probably somewhere in between. That said, it's still liver so it's possible they will take to it about the same. Do you have any beef chunks or hamburger around? Hamburger is nice bc since it is ground you can mix a little into some chunks of their normal meat and even add a little pureed meat to make a chunky grind slop that helps to disguise the new meat. Same can be done with a gradual intro of tiny slivers too though.

First, I wanted to ask you, how do you do those quotes? If I use the quote icon, then I get the whole post. If I try to copy and paste, I also get a line of code. First do a Quote: Then Delete the Quote Code Brackets (these encode for the quote to be embedded in the reply in quote-box form). Delete the beginning bracket: and the end bracket: Now you are left with only the text of the original post. I go through and highlight each section that I want to be sure to address, and then change the font to bold so that it is easy to distinguish from my replies... Then I type up my reply below that section and repeat for any and all relevant parts of the post I want to address. (dance)

Then everyone ran around and played, and an hour later...they all wanted a second breakfast. I whipped up a big batch of soup and everyone had a good 1/4 cup each. Good! Glad they loved the tongue, it's really good for them. Though I do find tongue really creepy. lol I'm glad Koda is allergic to beef so I have a good excuse to not feed tongue. I weighed everyone, this morning. Roamy is looking very lean. He weighed in at 2lbs 4.6 oz. Juliet is bulking up, I think she has her seasons backwards. We will see. She weighed in at 1lb 12.8oz. I lost my yoga center, when we moved here and then I learned to bake. Tennessee, Baking and No Yoga have not been kind to my figure (shy)Instead of telling your brain it can't have things, why not tell it what it CAN have? Have you ever looked into Paleo diets? While I am not an advocate of "diets," (it should be a sustainable lifestyle change) and all of the fad diets drive me absolutely bonkers, Paleo is the only labeled "diet" I would ever recommend, and I wouldn't really push anyone to do strict Paleo either. The idea is the same thing as with feeding ferrets raw - it's about biologically appropriate food, or what we evolved to eat. Basically the idea is to eat fresh foods, nothing processed. Strict paleo people avoid beans and grains and other stuff, but the key is just fresh, unprocessed. Beans are healthy for you and good sources of protein so avoiding those for instance isn't necessary - and you can't tell me that ancient humans didn't eat beans if they found some growing. If it was once alive, you can eat it! Meats, veggies, fruits. Try to limit grains/rice to stuff like Quinoa or even brown rice. If you eat like that it will naturally exclude stuff like baked goods (processed!), but if you get a craving for something sweet you can make sweet goodies out of fresh ingredients. I have seen some really good recipes for example for "granola bars" made out of all natural whole food ingredients: bananas, seeds, nuts, dried fruit, etc. (Pintrest is a grest recipe resource lmao). I hope your week is going well. Give Koda and Kenai, a big hug for me.They get so many hugs LOL You should see the looks I get. This week is brutal. But that's just going to be the next 6 weeks for me no matter what. Neuro anatomy, Immunology, are both super hard courses with a LOT to them and both classes our final exams will be our first 2 Shelf Exams (kind of like pre-board exams). Then head and neck anatomy and micro are both a LOT of info to know. Not necessarily difficult stuff, just a crap ton to memorize. We have a test a week just about. First immuno test (after only 3 lectures) is tomorrow. Micro test was last week, Physical Exam evaluation is next week, Head and Neck anatomy midterm is the week after that....

(This is my practice attempt at quote/highlight) Okay, good. I was nervous and no one had any problems. I have not seen Mika eat any of the smashed duck, though.

Hello (wave) Well, my first attempt to do a quote, didn't go right. I'm tired, so I will retry again tomorrow and thank you for the instructions. Tongue: I was quite happy that they liked the tongue. I find it creepy also. My Mother use to serve tongue and I would open the fridge, to find a giant cow tongue. It looked so icky, I could never eat it [img src="http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/ .png" src="http://i1105.photobucket.com/albums/h352/JW_2012/Emoticons/ .png" style="max-width:100%;"] Diets: I've heard of the Paleo diet, I'll look at it again. I've seen every diet out there. Since my son was/is Anorexic, I've looked at and read about every way to feed someone, there is. I was fascinated by the Blood Type diet. I'm usually pretty disciplined, just not so much lately. (giggle) Pictures: I'll try to get some tomorrow. I never posted the poop pics, I'll look at getting some poop pics, up too. Bones: All three eat the meat, bones and all. Mika has been sleeping alot today. We were out and about, so she may have gotten up. I just haven't seen her eat any of the crushed wing or neck. Your next six weeks sound brutal. Hopefully, your summer will come fast and give you some kind of break. I don't know how you do, all that you do. I'm really impressed, with all your hard work, you still find time to help all our ferrants, be a good mom to Koda and Kenai, take care of your family and have some fun. Whew, I'd like to have half your energy and brains. Thanks again, talk to you tomorrow. Stef

LOL I don't know if I'd call it energy and brains so much as a willingness to do what has to be done...more like stubborn persistence. For Mika, hand feed her some bone bits so you can watch her eat and see what she thinks of them.

For Mika, hand feed her some bone bits so you can watch her eat and see what she thinks of them. Second attempt at quotes. The weird thing is that I don't see any code at the top and bottom. Paul said hit the BBCode button, so I tried that. Mika wouldn't take any bone bits this morning. She did eat quite alot of soup. Roamy and Wynstan had some tongue slices and Juliet ate a big dinner last night of soup and tongue slices. She didn't want any breakfast, but it's early still and she will probably eat in a little while.

Good Afternoon (wave) Everyone finally ate some breakfast or two. They were all up and quite playful today. Roamy and Wynstan went for a walk. The girl's harness and leashes finally arrived, they weren't impressed. In between playtime, Roamy, Juliet and Wynstan ate alot of soup and had some pork tongue. Mika ate alot of soup and took a few pieces of tongue. She then stashed them, I think she was just humoring me. I took some beef out for dinner, I will make a soup from it. I suspect everyone will eat a late dinner, they all played a long time today and so nap time is late. I probably won't see anyone want dinner until after 9:00 p.m. :thankyou: Stef

Other than the 3 meals a week of organ soup they should be off of soup for now. Similar to the FD, they can use the soup as a crutch. Ferrets are lazy, and spoiled - why chew when you can slurp? We know they will all eat chunks, so only give them chunks (other than the organ soup days). Spoiled fuzz need some tough love. They need to be pushed or they won't move forwards. So time for some tough love for Mika. Keep trying to hand fed her bone pieces as often as you can - if she begs for a treat DO NOT CAVE! give her a treat of bony meat bits. Also if you see her running around and are able to grab her and give her a little piece of bone periodically, just pop it in her mouth, then do it.
