So it was decided that the absolute safest and easiest to ferret proof room in my house is my bedroom. It's bigger than my living room, without the added nuisance of cupboards, etc. My bed is on two sets of drawers under both sides of it and there's a big gap going up the center that a ferret could get into. This gap is big enough for me to crawl into. However the bed and box spring are snug against the drawers - should I still be concerned about that?
A ferret could get under my dresser, but there's nothing to fall on him or hurt him there. My closet has no doors on it. I have the dog kennels in my room. All cords are kept off the ground and all doors are snug to the carpet. I've gotten down and looked around and other than my laundry basket and the few things I leave on the floor after getting changed, are pretty much all I have to worry about.
One of my kennels has little square holes going all up the side of it - a ferret could figure out how to climb that right? Everything else is pretty much kept on top of night stands or on my dresser, top of my closet, etc. I may have to keep my books off the bottom shelf of my bookshelf though!
I may have a ferret coming home with me within the week. I'll let you know when I find out for sure.

Oh yes, they are very good at climbing. To give you an idea, mine climb the cat post, the cages, the computer tower, the chairs(cross pieces), any wicker. Basically, anything they can get their little claws into ;D Mine go under the dressers all the time.

Good luck and thank you for doing research Looking at you're looking shelter would be a great idea!! I would personally suggest a pair because they are friendlier The ferrets won't be as bored in the cage Cheers to getting ferrets

One of mine will climb and kind of cloth she can get her claws into (including our pant legs), our desk chairs (which have a fine mesh netting for the back) so now we have to withdraw the chairs from the desks when we're not at them, a rocking chair, and I swear she can levitate because I've found her on desks and tables and have NO idea how she got there.
