If he was going to have any issues he would have done so already. Are you being sure to separate kibble/raw by a few hours, as that alone can cause problems?

I was not aware that you have to separate kibble and raw by a few hours...I will start doing this. If I try in the afternoon when they get up from a nap they usually don't eat again until right before bed but I have fed them the soup in the evening and then let them eat their kibble.....didn't know this. Thank you. Also what kind of issues would I see.....my one with the sensitive tummy has more mucous in his stool with the soup....normal????How much of the soup would be considered a "good" amount for a meal....enough to skip kibble for that meal?

I haven't found a way to get fresh (hasn't been frozen) hearts yet, since most people make soup and freeze it for storage, is it important that the heart hasn't been frozen and then thawed for portioning? Thawing and refreezing meat is frowned upon for human food but it seems more like a gray area with pets.

Hi Yes for the ferrets its ok to thaw, portion & re-freeze. I think the reason they say not to in human food is something to do with the fact that some ingredients in processed foods may already have been previously frozen - but not 100% sure on this reason But yes it is fine to thaw and portion & refreeze for ferrets & pets. I do this a lot for the frozen chicken livers I get from the supermarket. I can get fresh pork or lamb livers but only frozen chicken ones and I have no idea why lol Hope this helps

Thank you. I may be able to just get frozen beef heart from a grocery store nearby, I've just about given up on chicken hearts since I don't want to have to special order dozens of pounds of it at once.

So this recipe is for 1 ferret correct ?
8oz chicken thigh 1oz heart 1oz liver 1/2 tsp eggshell powder
How much is 1 oz of heart and 1 oz of liver , say chicken?
For two ferrets I would just double everything and blend it together or should I make two separate batches to ensure that it will be balanced for each of them?

That's the right ratio on ingredients to use for the soup regardless of how many ferrets you have. Some people just multiply all ingredients by the same amount to make a larger batch of the recipe. For my two ferrets, one batch is enough to last 3-4 days so I have just been making one batch at a time. I'd tend to think that smaller batches are easier to get fully mixed so if you prepare several batches, you could just blend one and store it, blend another and store it, etc. and then just clean up when you're done making soup.
What I like to do is keep the liver/heart and chicken in separate frozen portions (ie. a container with 1oz each of liver and heart, another container with 8oz chicken thigh, etc) so I don't have to prep everything from scratch when I make another batch. If you have some freezable, air-tight containers, they work well for this if you have freezer space, and you can also use them to store soup that you've made and just thaw a container of soup in the fridge a day in advance before serving.
The first post in the thread calls for 1-2 chicken hearts and half a chicken liver. I cannot get chicken heart easily where I live so I use beef heart, and 1oz is only a tiny piece of that. If you don't have a kitchen scale you may just have to round up to 2 hearts, it's better to have a little extra taurine than not enough. Too much liver can be dangerous though, so it's probably best to not round that up in amount.

My guys dont like chicken slivers...is there a suggestion which they might like more??? They are eating about 2 oz of really thick soup....you could flip the spoon over and it will stay on it. Also they have only had chicken soup...can I mix say like ground turkey with chicken heart and liver? What should I do with the gizzards I purchased...any suggestions for these?

Yeah, that's doable. Before I dropped kibble, I mixed dry FDR with it. For the slivers, they may just not be comfortable with larger pieces of meat yet, mine sometimes are a bit picky, but they're getting better about it. You could try cutting the chicken smaller to see if they will accept it that way. I dice up a chicken heart or gizzard (I usually alternate between the two) and mix it with their raw chicken pudding and some wet FDR meals.

I have been slowly trying to switch my babies to raw since summer. It has been very hard for me to come on very much because it is hard to talk about my ferrets. It has been a rough year for us. I have lost 6 pets since May, including 3 precious ferrets (along with finding out my daughter has cancer). Can't wait til this year is over. I have only 2 now and trying to give them the best I can. I am getting so much great information that it really does help the babies I have with me now.

What about chicken gizzards? Are those healthy for them? I can't get a hold on the chicken hearts but I have chicken wings gizzard and livers. Am I able to make my soup from this with the egg shell powder?
