So in a few weeks I am bringing home a new ball of fuzz and he's apparently a kibble junkie supplemented with kangaroo -which I think is way too oily for a frequent treat- and after alot of weighing pros and cons I was looking to switch him onto a frakenprey diet but then decided why not just go the extra step and start with whole prey. Now a few questions, what sort of prey should I be using as a starting point? Off the top of my head I know I can pick up pinkie rats and mice, baby quails and I think adult mice and rats and with no shipping costs required it shouldn't cost more then a bag of premium cat food -cough $70 for a 1kg bag cough-. Of course when my boy arrives I will be signing up for a mentor but in the meantime I'm just looking for some early preparation.

I'm assuming you are in Australia? If so, here is a fairly comprehensive list on a variety of foods: holisticferret60.proboards.com/thread/9571/animals-food-australiaYou likely should include some store meats just to have them used to it. If your whole prey provider even changes the diet of the prey animals you may have a ferret going on a hunger strike. That happened with the person I was sourcing rabbit from. She changed bunnies diets for the better, and all my ferrets flatly refused to eat them after that

Well the person I adopted this boy was feeding him on nothing but kangaroo meat supplemented with supermarket cat food. So if I was to pick up a bag of mouse/rat pinkies would that be a good start?

Certainly won't hurt.
