I think an indicator of "too much" would be him at the water dish constantly, for long periods of time, and going through a TON of litter because he's voiding way more than is normal. I'm thinking of a cat we used to have. He became diabetic just before he passed, and that was our clue.

Yes normally thats what I would think too. This last time before he got sick, he was drinking, and NOT tons that i saw, I just knew he was drinking and thought good dont have to worry about that.... sigh and here he was dehydrated. Makes me concerned that i wont be able to tell till too late again. He's not there consistently but more then zeke is, though he's always seemed to drink/play in the water more then any of them. (not that he's playing now just it was hard to always tell when he was healthy if he was playing or drinking or both! lol)

I see what you are saying. And playing in the water makes it harder to measure amounts as well

What about a water bottle? I would worry about him not getting quite enough, but you could use a dry erase marker to track exactly how much water they are going through and not have to worry about splashing making it look like more... Just a thought.

it's a good thought, i had one in the cage before but took it down cause no one used it. I'd worry he wouldn't get enough with the water bottle. Poor boy is soo ready to rumble. It's like taming... well a ferret i gave him extra time out of cage today (by extra i mean 10 mins lol)Cause he was wanting out so bad. LOL Still watching/following him every where, not allowing climbing or steps. He did a few war dances telling off for stopping. His energy is good when he's up, balance is almost 100%(meaning balance when walking), thankfully he still tires quickly. The water???well it's just so backwards from what you normally watch for, it takes a bit to wrap my head around. I'll be calling the vet mon/tues to check in and ask her what she thinks then. I'll let you know. thx for all your inputs!

Don't forget about doing a scruff test for dehydration. Pinch(gently) his scruff. It should go right back down again. If it stays up, he's dehydrated.
