I'm curious to know if anyone has noticed a difference in the efficacy of the Des made by Virbac versus that from Australia... Bastien and Melinda both got their implants before it was available from the US... Neither of them needed new implants for over a year. Damia got her first implant in July (from Virbac) and I am taking her in tomorrow for another as she is definitely showing new signs of AD (bald butt, itchy, constantly grooming herself and others, lack of appetite, ...) teri

I've found as the disease progresses you will get less time out of the DES implant. It's not a cure only a stop gap before the disease over-runs you ferret. I've found to keep my guys comfortable without break through symptoms (the disease becomes hyper aggressive if the implant is allowed to "wear off")I have to do the implant every 6 months. Others have come to this conclusion too...some ferrets do very well on the 9 month schedule but I've found it doesn't work for me. I have to order directly from Australia as we cannot bring the drug across the Canada/US border ciao

Heather, That's exactly why I am so surprised at the reappearance of symptoms. This was Damia's first implant and she had just begun showing very mild symptoms. Now she has less fur than she did six months ago.... Bastien was almost completely bald by the time I managed to get the first implant for him. He got his 2nd implant almost 18 months after the initial one and was just beginning to show a signs. Melinda also got the Australian implant when she was completely bald - unfortunately, she has not been able to get another one due to what the vet believes to be hemangiosarcoma (ironically, she has shown absolutely no further signs of AD but I know she is living on borrowed time )
