Hi all,
My ferret Torpille started passing very slim stools on November 1st. I suspected a partial blockage. I kept an eye on him and gave him a teaspoon of pumpkin in the morning and some pure petroleum jelly at night until I could get a vet appointment. That seemed to help some - he even passed an almost-normal stool the evening before his vet appointment, which was November 6.
Because none of my other ferrets are affected and the kitten we brought home isn't likely to have infected him with anything (from a breeder, has received three rounds of deworming and seen the vet three times...); and his belly wasn't painful to the touch; and she couldn't feel anything hard in his digestive tract, she concluded it was probably just a bacterial infection that was resolving itself. She sent me home with probiotics (Bene-Bac) - I give him 0.1 cc once a day. This hasn't done anything to help the issue, in fact he started having very slim poop again as I discontinued the laxatives, and today he's been straining to poop (no crying or screaming), scooting his butt all over and leaving little trails of tiny poop and mucus in all corners of the cage. This is his most recent stool, which clearly displays grainy undigested food and lots of mucus:
So I'm quite worried now. I gave him two teaspoons of pumpkin when I saw this. He isn't showing other dangerous signs of blockage such as vomiting or losing weight, no tooth grinding, no blood in his stool, his stomach isn't hard (not bloated with gas), he's not dehydrated, he's not lethargic (though not as energetic either)... could this be something else, like IBS? Stress from the newcomer (he dislikes our kitten - he chases him, hisses at him, and bites him hard without letting go if he gets the chance)? I haven't changed his diet, he still gets 50/50 Evo and Orijen kibble.
I'm posting this in the emergency section because this has been going on for several days now and seems to be getting worse, so if people think it's a blockage I'm going to try to rush him to the vet today (they're closed tomorrow).
Thanks!
