Yup- exactly why all I am doing is just putting water and food in her bowls that's it.

Aww sorry for the ones that have passed Is there a reason that ferts have high littler mortality rates? I know nothing whatsoever about fert breeding From what I understand with larger litters, the ferret only has so many teats and can only produce so much milk. So if she gave birth to 11 babies and only has six or eight nipples, some of those babies are likely going to die because they can't all nurse at once, and "taking turns" doesn't work too well, if the mother could even manage it. The stronger ones will fight for their nipple and hold it and the weaker ones won't survive.

We have had other "breeders"(read in it for the money) on here before. Losses have often been much higher when litters are handled far too young. Mum often rejected, or even killed, them.

Cricket had 9 and weaned 9. I never mentioned it here but she developed milk fever (hypocalcemia) when the kits were 3 weeks old and almost died. This, in spite of daily feedings of goat's milk with added bonemeal and baby food. She survived because I checked her and the kits diligently after the issue developed. She got sick one night while I was at work. I came home and found her in convulsions. He temp got as high as 107.8 at the vet's office. They gave her calcium gluconate at the clinic. I got a bottle, checked her calcium daily and gave her shots as needed for the next 2 weeks. It was very stressful, to say the least. Apparently, from what I've read and heard privately, hypocalcemia is relatively common in UK ferrets. Cricket will never be bred again. She wouldn't have been anyway, but that sealed the deal.

I bet that was stressful!
Well I won't be updating anymore as I am getting her desexed as soon as I can.
I just went to feed her and as soon as I opened her cage she screamed- and ran up my arm so stressed. I looked in and saw all her kits dead.
Maggots smothering their mouths. It was DISGUSTING. My Husband fed her last and when I asked if he removed old food he said "no, I didn't" And sure enough ...
I also had the fly mesh to tack onto her cage with me too (just got it today, as I had to wait for stupid deliveries the last day and a bit and was not allowed to leave home incase it came).
Im in tears. And poor Quizzy. I feel like the biggest failure ever and As much as I appreciate all of your help with everything- I won't be back after today.

I'm at a loss for words.. i was following this.. I'm so sorry. I know you said you're no longer going to be here, you may not see this but if you do, know that it happens. That it wasn't your fault..and from what i saw, you did a wonderful job with her(once you got past what the vet said to give her) May they rest in peace, their little hearts..

I'm so sorry that this happened. I'm also sorry that you feel you have to leave too. As Stivs mentioned, you probably won't read this but unfortunately, high mortality rates in ferrets is not uncommon and this year with it's high temps have been particularly hard on ferret kits. Please don't feel you need to leave. I will light travelling candles for the wee little ones, to guide them on this next journey. Fly high little ones, you are shooting stars. ciao

If you do read this please dont leave ! heat this year has hit even the very experienced breeders unfortunately this is all part of breeding along with joy comes a lot of sorrow no one has control over the weather I would take your jill into the vet and have an injection given to dry up her milk and consider an early spey once she has had a few weeks to recover watch her to make sure she eats and drinks plenty so sorry for your loss take care bye for now Bev
