SO I just got some covers for the ramps a week ago because I noticed my older ferret having trouble getting down them. So got some nice homemade ones on ebay and they are great, but now I have noticed my ferrets are sliding down now instead and hitting the cage.  Just found my oldest guy at the top of the cage and tried to get him to come down for the past ten minutes. He seemed so scared like he did not want to do it. Now he will not even go down the last ramp he just jumps off the bottom shelf. Any ideas. I just dont want to come home to any broken bones |

Well, you could always remove the ramps and add a block/step for them to get up and down from. Sometimes my kids use the top of the feeding den to get to the top instead of the ramps. Some also use a low hanging hammock.

good idea but where would I find small block steps that would stay in place? Maybe have someone make them I guess

Here's the set up I use for the bottom of the cage. :  Hammocks for the top level would certainly work as well. And yes- that's an old toque in the corner- they love curling up in it ;D |

if you didnt want the thing to move you could always poke holes and zip tie it or whatnot

You could tape together some coke boxes? Not only will they have some steps to get up, but they'd also have some new hidey holes!

I made my ramp covers out of a textured upholstery type fabric that has a lot of grip to it and have never noticed a problem, maybe you could stitch a strip of something rougher to one side?

My ferrets slide down our ramps too. Our smallest ferret is scared of heights, but she likes to bite a little still, so when I want her out I just put my finger on the ramp through the bars, then move them down as she comes down!  I don't think it harms them, because I put a towel at the end of each ramp so they don't hit the cage bars. Instead, I've made it kind of fun for them. I see them go up just to slide back down!  The hammock idea is pretty neat too! You could also try the Marshalls Pirate Net that you buy with or without the Pirate Ship bed. I've heard people tying it under the shelf, then stretching it downward and tying it to the cage bars. |

Where the blue tub is. I use a hammock. I have a 6 1/2 year old that does just fine. Climbing on top of the hammocks.

If your ferrets suddenly decide it's a fun trampoline, they can actually crash the shelf down You can use mulitple hooks to hand it from the cage top, or simply have one hammock across, and the next can suspend from that hammocks hooks. |

Knock on wood. I have not had any problems with the shelves falling down with hammock hooked up like that. The bottom hammock, you will see all my kids piled on top of each other....waiting for mom to let them out. I probably jinx myself now.  Talking about sliding down the ramp...this is how my crew comes out of their cage every night. They look like bowling pins.  Bowling pin   |

I've always used pieces of indoor/outdoor carpeting on my ramps, with twist ties to fasten them top and bottom. That gives them good traction and is easily replaced.
