I'm going to be making shrimp tonight and I was wondering if cleaned shrimp would be safe for ferts. I know you can feed them raw fish (it just can make them a little stinky) but I have no idea about shrimp or shellfish.
Obviously I wouldn't put seasoning or anything on theirs. If it is safe, is it safe to feed raw or should I boil it?
Normally they eat chicken, pork, beef, veal, lamb, turkey or cornish hen. Just figuring since I was cooking with shrimp tonight it might be a nice little bit of variety.

i believe they can eat anything raw that's not spiced or anything like that. so i think it should be fine.

I don't see a problem with it. I know Vincent can't have any, because he inhales them so fast he chucks them right back up again

Oh Vincent. I'll try them out on some shrimps. Maybe just one cut up to see. If they like it, it'd be pretty easy to keep some frozen to give once a month or so as a treat.

Mine won't touch it. They sniff it and then look at me like "wait? You want me to Eat this?" *walks away in disdain* Oh well! More for me!

PS Be sure that you rinse them really well first. And due to the recent oil spills, I would probably avoid feeding them wild caught shrimp (depending on where it was caught though) and go for farmed shrimp. I know down in CA where my parents are there was some *weird* stuff going on with the shrimp due to the spills. Not sure of the details though, just that my parents told me not to eat any.

Thanks for the warning Katt. Does anyone know if I should remove the tails or just leave them on?

Leave them on. Shrimp tails are soft enough, they shouldn't have a problem with them.

I gave the kids a shrimp last night, cut into 3 pieces. Loki greedily licked it but didn't seem to know how to eat it. Juno stashed two pieces, but I cleaned the cage before she had a chance to eat the stash. Asher couldn't care less. I think I'm going to try again with a shrimp, but I might chop it up into smaller pieces.
On a side note, my dog Angel liked shrimp but Lucy did not.

Just an update: The shrimp were fought over as a prize to be hoarded, but not eaten. I don't know if they didn't like the shrimp or if they liked them so much they wanted to save them for later? Oh well. They have plenty of other meats and that just leaves more shrimps for me!
