I was just wondering if those of you who made your own litter boxes for both your cages and ferret-proof rooms, wouldn't mind posting some pictures for me? pretty please?
I was told that the 28 quart rubbermaid bin will fit half the floor of my ferret nation but when I went rubbermaid shopping today I was really confused about which height was best and if it's better to cover more of the floor or just have a smaller one in the corner.
How the heck do you cut holes in the rubbermaid bins? Is cutting a bigger entrance or having a hole with maybe a tube in, for more privacy, better?
I'd really just love to see some examples so I can decide which route I want to go!!!
It's definitely seems like it's better to have one that covers about half the floor!! I have had ZERO accidents in the cage since I've done that. Before, I had 2 of the regular high-back boxes, one on each shelf (similar to www.bunnyrabbit.com/equipmentpix/litterpan_highback.jpg minus the stupid wire thing), and they would constantly push them around, dump them over, play in them, etc.
As for height, make sure it will fit underneath the shelf is all. It should at least be a few inches high so they don't poop over the sides. There's 3 options for height settings on the shelves.. I usually keep mine on the middle..
I just bought a plain ol' super large litter box and used a sawz-all to cut a rounded shape out of the side (my dad likes to fix cars as a hobby so he has tons of tools all around the garage). Not sure how everyone else did it, sorry. You might be able to score the box with a razor blade then poke a hole through the score with a scissors and cut. Make sure you also have a file of some sort to get rid of the rough edges.
Mine doesn't quite fit, however, so I had to secure it to the side of the cage with c-clamps.. otherwise they'd get behind it and push it around.
its not a great pic but i have pics of me making one!! if youd like those it doesnt fit snug i had to attach it to the cage but the 28 qt works as well as a custom comode
The only 28 quart one I could find at the store today has really low sides so I was worried about litter being flung every which way. That custom made ferret nation one has very low sides too though.
I'll have another look and see if I can find ones that size with a bit higher sides.
I keep thinking "but if I get a litter box that big they'll have no room" but I keep forgetting ferrets mostly sleep in hammocks and things that are off the ground ... definitely a change from my hedgehogs!
you could also do a remote litter box. I'll go find the link...
Already browsed through that link thorughly so save yourself the trouble ;D
Although how on earth would you do one with a ferret nation? I don't see it being possible to cut through those wires, the same way you would with another cage....
I feel the same way That's what has stopped me from doing a remote box. Though some people remove the side bars and replace with some wood, to prevent permanently altering the cage. (Too much work for me ;D)
Don't forget- if you get a higher sided box, you'll have to cut it down in the front, or they simply won't use it. Too difficult to get into. You could also get one that just fits under the shelf, and cut a hole, and put a tube into it. Allows ingress/egress, and helps keep the litter in place

This is what I was thinking of doing, I was hoping someone else had attempted it so I could see what it looks like... but this way I could have a rubber-maid with a lid and put a tube in it, would that be a ventillation issue?
