Hello all! I've been looking into getting a ferret *hopefully* within a few months. Never owned one, but have ferretsat for a friend a few times. They were so much fun! My question is, would a freeze dried diet like Stella and Chewy's be balanced enough? From reading the posts on here, raw seems to be the best option, but I'm not ready to do that completely. At least not right away. Thanks in advance!

Hi and Welcome to the HFF. I use alot of freeze dried raw/fresh. I wanted to make the switch and started doing all the reading and learning. First I learned about kibble and bought the Wysong Epigen 90, and my two took to that and liked it. Then I brought home a baby, and had done enough reading to want to try some raw on her. My Mika took right to the raw, and I got brave and started offering soupies and then raw to the two older ones. More reading ....and then my older one got sick, and my vet is really against raw feeding. So is my husband. More reading ....and I find the freeze dried raw, and wanted to try some. By now, No one wants any kibble now, and I was getting nervous about nutrition requirements, and not ready to make a full switch. I can't find raw hearts around here, and I get too nervous, when no one wants to eat. Anyway, I have been ordering the FDR and all three of mine just love it. The upside is that they eat a lot and eat well. The downside is that it is expensive. So, now I am using FDR and introducing raw. My menu plan now is Fridays...fish. Stella and Chewys Salmon/Cod and Whole life Cod. Saturdays/Sundays..organs. Chicken gizzards and dried hearts, and some diced raw chicken. Monday is turkey day...raw. Tuesday/Wednesdays is Wysong Archetypal 1. Thursdays is Stella and Chewys Duck,Duck,Goose. For treats, I use Natures Variety chicken, Wysong Pheasant, and raw eggs on the weekend. I still hope to make a full switch, but right now this works for us and by introducing the FDR, I know that in an emergency situation I.e. Tornados, overnight vet visits, travel et....I have an option of easy to store food. Good Luck, hope this helps some.

Thank you poncesmom for all of the information The freeze dried diet does seem expensive but so does feeding completely raw. Plus, I have limited freezer space. Maybe going the route you take with your ferrets, incorporating raw on some days, will work for me. That sounds like a great idea! I just want to read and learn as much as I can before getting him (decided on getting a male already lol). Expecting mom syndrome??? Anyways thanks again!

Actually, feeding full raw is suprisingly inexpensive, especially compared to freeze dried raw, or even a quality kibble. No way on earth I could afford to feed our 9 on FDR, or a decent kibble.
