I hope everyone isn't tired of me, but I have an emergency on my hands. I had thought that Gavin was out of the woods. He's been perfect the last week. Perfect eating, drinking, pooping, peeing, etc... AND I have ferret proofed like crazy. Their room is pretty much empty of stuff on the floor level and they can't get up high. And he's had very limited, and very supervised playtime this week, I really don't think he's gotten a hold of anything else. Also, he's been getting about 1-2 tbsps of Pumpkin per day as a preventative and to try and push any floating blockages through.
Anyway, today when I got home around 5 or so, Gavin was acting lethargic and bored. He would play, but not much. He would eat, but not much. And he would poop, but it was very seedy diarrhea, and a little while later it was more normal, but only have the diameter of normal poop.
I would have taken him to the vet then just to get Xrays and see if there was still a floating blockage. But they close at 4:30.
Now I'm more worried than even those other days because even though the situation was bad, he's never shown symptoms. But tonight he's: only taken food and pumpkin by being finger fed (and I made him his very favorite soup that he usually pigs out on), pawed his mouth, trys to sleep but is restless and keeps moving, acts uncomfortable sometimes, opens his mouth wide as if he's yawning but its more like he's gagging. For example, he's been laying in his bed, then he'll jump up and open his mouth.
I called our only after hours vet in the area and they do not treat ferrets. There is another clinic that treats ferrets but they don't really specialize and they open tomorrow morning for a few hours. I am going to try and get him in there, but I'm so so so worried. Is there anything more I can do in the meantime? He just gave me a really nice, normal, well formed poop so that's good. Could it be anything other than a blockage/partial-blockage?
He's up and about exploring at the moment and seems happy. It seems to me his condition has been changing in waves. He'll be fine for an hour or two, then sick acting for an hour or two, then better.
Please help if you can, I feel so helpless, and guilty if he doesn't make it.
