That is the great thing about not using any ramps. They learn to climb up and down I use the one shelf in the high position, then hang a hammock and have the sleeping den so they can get down easily from the high shelf.

I don't use any ramps at all either anymore Sherry. Gives them a lot more room. We bought extra shelves and we just use 2 in each cage level, usually on the first and third peg positions. Perfect climbing height.

I don't even have those. Just a single shelf and hammies

That's what I have just extra hammies, mine actually seem to like using the hammies and their climbing skills better than the ramps anyway. They have NO trouble getting from level to level. of course they are young, I could see it being problematic for older ferrets or ferrets with health problems.

Can they get from the first level to the second level that way too with just the hammocks? That's a really good idea, I want to try it. I just worry with the hole from the first to second level being so small they would have a hard time pulling themselves up. Does anyone have any pics?

Mine do it but my ferret nation has a half shelf thing, so they go bottom floor, to hammy, to half shelf through hole to top ,to hammy, to second half shelf thing and so one. Ok this is a terrible drawing but the black things are the half shelves, the red things hammies, the green things are bed boxes, the blue thing is water bottle, brown thing litter pan, then the yellow and blue thing small removeable food and water bowls.

Hopefully this gives you a good picture of how it's done. We use double shelves typically, but you could just as easily use hammocks in place of the shelves. Mine have no problems pulling themselves up between levels, though it took them some practice at first. My little snots like to drag blankets down between the levels and form them into den like pockets to sleep in, and they'll also drag the tunnel pieces I leave in the cage into the hole and actually walk up and down through the tunnel bits. Tunnel addicts much?

I remember reading this thread a few months ago shortly after it was first created.
Now I'm making a mental note to carefully inspect ALL the various parts and pieces of our new 182 when it arrives tomorrow.... and take those little clips and put them away somewhere, where they won't be used!
However, I am also now thinking that I might just go without the ramps. Serenity loves to climb things so much, I don't think the lack of ramps will bother her, and Malcolm is so much bigger then her that he just ignores the tube ramp in our current cage and just pulls himself up a level.

With the new shelves you NEED those clips or you literally cannot use the ramp.

Not sure why the pictures are upside down (headwall) anyway, if the ramp is placed correctly, it should not fall. In order to place the ramp correctly you should take off the bottom 2nd level part and take the ramp and push it in. It takes a bit of force but it should stay, and the ramp hooks should look like the one below.

Here we go. In this picture you can see there is no big gap if you install it properly.

Ditto, clips are only for the shelves.
Sherry, you can put the ladder on the bar under the shelf and not use the clips. That is what we do.

I have the same cage and I don't use those clips. If you just hook it on without the clips it fits together nicely I thought the same thing when I put mine together... Took away the clips and haven't had a problem since then
