Anyone do it? I have a rat infestation in my chicken house. They are too smart to trap. Wondering if a ferret could do the job. I know the original purpose of domesticated ferrets was hunting. I would only let the ferret out in there in the evening, not sure if they would kill chickens? Would I need to get a baby or could an older one that needs a home be trained?

If you go to You Tube and type in Bucket traps, you will find alot of videos on how to make a bucket trap to catch your rats. This seems to be a safe and proven way to catch rats. I know people use to use ferrets to catch rats, but it sure seems dangerous (to me) for the ferrets. The ferrets can get loose, get diseases from the rats and a baby wouldn't stand much chance against a rat. And by the time you train the ferret, your rat population could double. And once trained, your chickens will be in trouble. Good Luck and let us know what happens!

So not pitch a ferret against an adult rat, especially a wild one. Te ferret will get badly injured. And even if you could manage to train them they would kill your chickens

I don't know how you would contain the ferrets, but I've read in several places that putting ferret poops around gets rid of rats and mice. So start saving poop. It's free.

He doesn't have ferrets. He wants to buy them to kill the rats.

Ferret poop does absolutely nothing so it doesn't matter even if he could get the poop. I've had mice every spring and fall. It doesn't matter. Rodents are rather stupid that way. I've even had chipmunks dig dens in the ferret run...the chipmunks don't last very long but even with the high mortality rate they still come back. I wouldn't pit a ferret against a rat ever again but if they want something to hunt rats either use traps or JRT's They do an excellent job ciao

If you get working stock of ferret they can do the job… but not pet store bought.
