My 2.5 year old male ferret, Ben, had surgery to remove his right adrenal gland on Thursday. He came home yesterday late afternoon. He is on no pain meds. Is this typical?
It seems odd to not have him on pain meds after abdominal surgery. I have had rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits sent home on Meloxicam or even Butorphenol for pain after surgeries. This was a different veterinarian though.
thoughts?

I'm surprised but his/her theory might be if the ferret is in pain they may not be too enthusiastic about playing. That's not really fair as post surgery pain can actually make recuperation more difficult and make healing take longer ciao

Heather, I agree that if possible, meds for pain management should be given post surgery. I was not sure if the concern is gastrointestinal upset in ferrets. What medication, in your experience, is typically given to ferrets post surgery?
Actually, now that I think of it, I am going to go back and look at my paperwork for Minnie. She was spayed ( different vet) and I am sure she was on pain meds post surgery for at least 3 days.

I just looked up her summary and she was on Meloxicam for 4 days after spay surgery. That made up my mind...I am going to give Ben some that I have on hand.
I'm upset that they did not send him home with something for pain management.

Both adrenalectomies I've had done came home with meds, the first one had 3 days of meds and now Pip just got his yesterday and got buprenorphine, they sent 6 preloaded syringes to give every 8-12 hours as needed.

I surprised that no meds were offered but traumeel could be used. Homeopathic would be my answer. There is no side-effect, such as stomach upset or lethargy. ciao
