I'm interested in getting a ferret eventually. (maybe by the end of the year...not soon, I have throat surgery coming up and do not want to be all loopy when bringing home a new furbaby)
I have a couple of different cages that I got for pet rats. Rats do not live very long at all, and so the cages are vacant.
One is a single Ferret Nation cage, the other is a Prevue "Small Animal Cage" 495.
I also have a big ol' Marshall cage that has been discontinued. The original Penthouse, I believe. The bottom half is currently inhabited by my husband's rabbit. (he could be moved into the Ferret Nation with a pen around it instead, thinking of doing that anyway) I just don't know if I can replace the platforms and ramps in it, since it's been replaced with the Penthouse II.
I also have two dogs, a Basset Hound and a Dachshund, both used to living with "prey" that they may not chase or bark at or bother in any way. (the Dachsie used to be terrified of the rats...she killed one by accident and got scared, never went near them again) The family cat is very young, and has learned to leave the rabbit alone if he's out of his cage. (Velvet would NOT be in the same room as the ferret if I decide to get one!! He may be a big rabbit, but rabbits are walking dinner for everything else) Velvet's room is blocked with a baby gate, and doubles as Sasha's (the cat) private litter box room (to keep the dogs from eating her poop, yech).
I'm thinking, if I do get a ferret, that the cage would be in the main living room, with a pen around it as a yard to play in, and I would fashion some sort of cover for the play-yard to keep the cat out and the ferret in.
Due to a horrible disaster with my last cat, Mischief, who died at two years old of kidney failure, Sasha eats raw food. For now, she gets Nature's Variety chicken bites, but I'm working on changing to homemade, using this recipe : www.catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood My sisters already make this at their house, I'm thinking I could make it at their house, and then freeze it at my house since they already have a grinder. Would a ferret be okay with the same food? Having lost one cat, very young, to renal failure, I'm THROUGH with kibble for my cats and I figure ferrets are as carnivorous as they are, so why do kibble for them, either?
Any input would be appreciated!
