Hi...My 2 year old Teddy had maggots in his cage. I cleaned it and him and have checked his poop, and all seems normal, EXCEPT.....he is sneezing a lot and isn't as playful, his appetite has decreased a little bit and he keeps making a hacking sound. I'm in nyc and I think a fly laid eggs on his poop, but I'm not sure if these maggots caused him harm in anyway, or if they've lodged into his sinus cavity?! Someone please help. Also I'm having a hard time finding a low cost vet for him. There is currently a ferret ban in nyc.

Sneezing plus decreased appetite and activity level could very be an upper respiratory infection. You should definitely have a vet check it out.
As for the maggots, I would reccomend doing an intense cage clean. I've heard that using hydrogen peroxide, followed by white vinegar, will kill almost any bacteria.

Just a word....maggots only eat dead flesh, they won't eat live flesh. Have you checked the whole cage for stashed meats? I agree the sneezing and coughing sound like an upper respiratory issue ciao

Thanks so much! I was just really worried because my flemish giant rabbit died last week from fly strike, I wasn't sure if the same could affect my ferret too. I'm gonna have him checked out by a vet for the sneezing and congestion. I was really worried some of the maggots either crawled into his nose or ears or something yikes! But I don't know if that is even possible? Is it? Since I cleaned and fly proofed my house, I haven't had anymore flies, THANK GOD!!!!

I very much doubt he would have let the maggots get that far. Ferrets are predators, they won't put up with nasty bugs crawling all over them.
Definitely need some antibiotics for that infection though. What do you use for ferret bedding?
Do you feed raw? I am just wondering what the maggots are sticking around to eat.

I use carefresh natural bedding, and wee wee pad lined litter pan. I found that the maggots were on the poop in the litter pan at the bottom of his cage, I assumed that a fly hatched the eggs directly on his poop. None of the maggots were on him. I have been inspecting his poop every time he uses the litter pan and haven't found anything in his poops. His pops seem normal. I feed him hard cat food, and raw meat on occasion. I never allow him to stash it though. Some times he eats soft cat food too. But I never leave soft food or raw food sitting for more than 15 minutes b/c I don't want to attract flies anymore...I'm so traumatized from seeing all those maggots! YUK! lol The sneezing and hacking sounds started about 5 days ago, around the time I discovered the maggots.

Perhaps some vetting would be advised as it doesn't appear to have resolved itself and you're concerned ciao

Yes! Agreed! A trip to the vet is def. in order. Gonna schedule an appt. for the lil' guy. What do you think they'll prescribe? This is my first time dealing with a sick ferret.

Hi this time of year I deal with lots of maggots ! my guys are fed raw and they love stashing it in places way way back in there beds and then conveniently cover it with clean bedding! believe me I wish I had a penny for every shovel full of maggots I have removed in this warm weather and the fuzzys look at me as if to say awww but mom they were making it tender ! yuck the sneezing does sound like a uti its easily treatable so dont worry unfortunately no matter how clean you are in warm weather flies find there way in its just something all of us have to suffer with ( my defence is a sea of sticky fly papers lol ) good luck at the vet take care bye for now bev

Still no more maggots, THANK GOD!!!! lol :) Teddy is much better, he wasn't sick after all! He had been reacting to the dust bunnies under the couch(his favorite hiding place) I have since cleared out all dust bunnies from under the couch and he hasn't sneezed since. He also passed some hair and lint through his poop, I guess that's what he was hacking on. Poor thing! Glad to be back on here to report good news, I was really worried, now I can rest at night :)
