I heard mix things about giving ferrets baths. First I heard that you want to give ferrets a bath three times a year. Which I thought was really weird. They told me this because it makes their fur really oily and will make them smell awful. Then I was reading that you want to give them a bath once a week. Which is a huge difference. What are is your input?

You'll find alot of different opinions on bathing. So, I'll just tell you what I do. I bathe mine about every three months. All of mine like baths, I can check for fleas and groom them for bonding time. I love after the bath, toweling them dry and then watching them go insane trying to get as dirty as possible immediately afterwards. Then I offer a treat and we have a good chase. Ferrets for Dummies (do you have a copy? it has good basic ferret info) says don't bathe too often as it dries their skin out.

I do every 3-6 months too. I use baby conditioner instead of shampoo though. The conditioner dries them out less. Water baths can be more frequent though, it's the shampoo that strips their skins of natural oils, causing them to over produce new oils and get smelly!

I don't bathe....unless of course something disgusting gets rolled in. Ferrets do not need baths. They're self groomers and even the show people only bathe before shows. I do groom and wipe down though. I don't bath my cats, so why bathe my ferrets. Now that doesn't mean they don't get to go swimming and play in the water. My hobs get rinsed before going to a meet and greet in public but they never get soaped. My little Lady Morgain has never been washed in the whole 2 yrs of her life. As far as I know Boris and Natasha have never been bathed either and they're 4 and 5 yrs. Now my insulinoma, adrenal boy who was a na-kid, couldn't stay clean. He lacked the undercoat that kept the dirt away from his skin so he required regular bathing, plus the pred had caused severe swelling around his legs. This caused dirt to become trapped in the folds. This needed to be cleaned. A healthy ferret doesn't need to be washed on a regular basis. ciao

My kids only get a bath if they've rolled in something, (its been a few years since their last bath) other than Lucy who still walks through her poop on a regular basis (she's blind). With her I'll soak her feet in warm water to clean them and then rinse with clean water, but I don't use shampoos or soap because I have to do this almost daily and I don't want to dry out her skin. (She did get a shampoo today though because she decided to sleep on a poo pile... *headwall*)
