I haven't tried this yet, but everyone's suggestions gave me the idea to put a treat in a toilet paper roll and stuff both ends with new paper, for hearing ferrets it will rattle and catch their attention. I've also seen people who put treats in Easter eggs, other people who hide them in dig boxes. I really wanna find a good foraging toy online, but can't find any that don't have reviews saying they're way too easy to figure out.
We have filled the cat carrier with scrunched newspaper then we Velcro it shut placing it on a wooden storage box, she climbs up the box chews the Velcro open (pre made cable tidy Velcro tab) then claws open the door to the carrier to dig around the newspaper before nesting in for a snooze. She loves it! Although she would happily settle for the Velcro to chew all day long x
The egg carton and soda bottles are great ideas - I am definitely going to give those a try. This isn't truly "homemade" in the sense of this thread, but someone gifted me a wonderful foraging toy made out of two pig or cow hooves with hte hollow parts facing each other. They hang from a hook so that the ferret has to push them apart to get the treat out of the hollow part of the hoof. Koda likes it, Kenai likes it too because he can actually "solve" it. (giggle)
