Okay. Thank you so much. Now.... Should I be adding more fat to her diet. And if so.... What kinds? Examples?

Just make sure when you are portioning your meats (or making soup), you leave the skin on the chicken. Also chicken legs and thighs tend to be fattier than breasts. When picking meat up for them, choose nice fatty cuts of beef, lamb, pork (pork belly is good but you should trim SOME of the fat from that).

Will they be picky about other meats? All of the girls have been VERY picky today. Especially little Izzy and Miss Lucy. Nothing but spoon feedings (just to get them to eat) and very little at that. Does heat affect appetite?

Yes, the heat will affect their appetite. Once you have them on chunks of meat I found them a lot less picky. You just slowly mix in a bit hear and there and decrease the other stuff. It didn't take long for my girls to move onto other proteins once they were fully eating chunks.

Gotcha. It has been severely hot here the past few days. :/
This morning, after feeding I put in a few hearts for Ziva and Jane munch on while I was gone and they immediately started chowing down again. They LOVE hearts. Haha. It was so nice to see them enjoying it.

Update: July 7: Izzy- 40 g Lucy- 52 g Ziva- 42 g Jane- 30 g July 8: Izzy- 37 g Lucy- 50 g Ziva- 45 g Jane- 34 g July 9: Izzy- 35 g Lucy- 53 g Ziva- 48 g Jane- 33 g I think I broke my blender.... (headwall) But on the upside...I'm just going to have to force them all to eat small chunks/slivers. or mince it myself depending on their reactions. Ziva and Jane obviously fine. Lucy will be alright. Izzy is my diva at the moment. (nod) and not happy about their amounts... so I'm really going to push them on eating more. some how..... and tomorrow ill be off to this place just north of us to go check out the organs they've got going on....i think also, that they will be much cheaper than my previous source. with more selections. Judging by Ziva and Jane's delightful reactions to the whole hearts... (you could just see them enjoying the texture and the challenge and just EVERYTHING) I feel like I've been holding them back and I want to push ahead with them. Since Izzy and Lucy are caged/play together and are separate from Jane and Ziva... even if Izzy and Lucy are slower to progress i think it will work because they are always separated. thoughts? and thanks for being so patient with me BTW. I know my posts are like, all over the place. oh, and lastly... seeing as how i will need a cleaver soon. Any brand recommendations? or what to look for when buying?

Sure if you feel they are ready to plow ahead, by all means do so. You are over one of the biggest hurdles by far (getting them to eat on their own). Once you have them well onto slivers, don't be afraid to try working a bit of new protein (Pork, Cornish Hen, Quail, etc). As for cleavers you want a nice heavy one with a thick blade. Cutco makes a nice home cleaver but they are expensive (~$200 Canadian). If you go to a restaurant supply store they should have some. BTW, you have nothing to apologize for. They only thing that upsets us mentors is when our mentees DON'T post. We look at any post as a good thing.

Just gave Ziva and Jane a chunk with bone. They shared it and now Jane is going crazy with the bone!

well, Ziva and Jane are doing great. Lucy is doing better..she is a little less eager about a larger amount of meat slivers...but she's eating a lot still. Izzy however.....totally had to go get a blender. You would have thought the world had ended! She thought it was poison. And now even back to the old soup she is being so PICKY. any thoughts on how to get her to come around? it's like she thinks I've tried to poison her so she wont trust anything i give her. little brat. but i guess thats what i deserve for trying to speed her up! also, i know I've been leaving food in their cage because I'm always afraid they will go hungry until i get home. the time i leave work everyday is usually around 1 pm but lately its been quite unpredictable.. 3 sometimes 4 pm... I guess my question is: if I do two feedings a day, and the first feeding is between 2:30 and 3:30 am (before i go to work) what should my other feeding time be? and perhaps, because of my leaving the food...Izzy actually is eating? IDK i just feel really stupid because you have already told me to not have food between feedings so their appetite is strong. I just figured if it was raw it wouldn't be as bad.

Yeah, it if you leave food out it is very hard to know who is eating what. I would suggest only feeding at set times. 12 hours apart is best but you can very that a few hours either way (it won't be the end of the world). In the wild ferrets can sometimes not catch anything in a day.

UPDATE:
Jane: 737 g (25.9 oz) / 737g (25.9 oz) / 760g (28.80 oz) / 730 g (25.75 oz) / 750g (26.45 oz) gaining.... and so much energy. She usually has a seasonal rat tail...I've always been worried about adrenal but they've never found anything yet. Her senior exam is coming up in august so we will check it out then. and she eats on her own. she prefers to take her stash from the bowl to a corner and chow down. Izzy: 842g (29.7 oz) / 822g (28.9 oz) / 830 g (29.27 oz) / 815 g (28.75 oz) / 814g (28.71 oz) meh, still not impressed. she is being a real pain. she will eat soup/mince from a spoon when SHE feels like it, no bowl. although I've found she prefers the mince in a glob on her blankies to eat instead. but at least she eat it then...Lucy: 1117g (39.4 oz) / 1077g (37.9 oz) / 1040 g (36.68 oz) / 961 g (33.89 oz) / 953g (33.61 oz) not too worried with THIS loss, but overall im not happy. ive been feeding her more fat and everything. She' still eating from a bowl. and a decent amount. and i follow it up with a spoon to ensure ive stuffed her till she too full. any thoughts on her still? the last time she went the vet, he had thought her system was on the fritz because of the raw....and im SURE he will say it's the raw again unfortunately. ideas? i really want her weight up. she really is TOO thin for my liking. not saying she wasnt over weight but...she needs to put on the ounces. Ziva: 899g (31.7 oz) / 910g (32 oz) / 921 g (32.48 oz) / 910g (32 oz) / 910 (32 oz) great stuff, she is at least maintaining. abundance of energy... and of course she eats all on her own.
July 10: Ziva: 75g Jane: 67g Lucy: 64g Izzy: 44g
July 11: Ziva: 72g Jane: 71g Lucy: 62g Izzy: 54g
July 12: Ziva: 66g Jane:75g Lucy: 62g Izzy: 56g July 13: Ziva: 77g Jane: 71g Lucy: 65g Izzy: 53g July 14: Ziva: 69g Jane: 67g Lucy: 71 g Izzy: 49g Just worried about Lucy, this is my only issue. She acting normal like i said, playing hard. oh and i ordered beef spleen, and pork kidneys to test Ziva and Jane out on. Just have to wait for them to call me saying they are ready to be picked up. any other organs you would suggest? (giggle)
