One of the number one things that comes to mind is cushing's disease in regards to the rapid weight gain, but I'm 99% sure that I read in several places that Ferrets cannot get cushings disease. I wish you the best and I hope you can get this figured out. I am very happy to hear it is not juvenile lymphoma though.

No, what ferrets get is adrenal, not cushings.

I am really at a loss as to how to deal with Chia gaining weight. My other 2 are perfectly fine, so it can't be the diet. I haven't changed anything in their diet either. She is quite tubby now, and has to kind of waddle around. She gets some pee on her belly when she potties on the pee pad, because she doesn't lift herself very well. I am also worried that it is starting to effect her breathing. She tires very fast now, and huffs a lot more. When she is trying to get around her belly (turning a tight corner or anything) she huffs quite a bit. She really needs to lose some of this weight, but the vet hasn't gotten back to me yet about any new information she has found.
Does anyone have any advice for me? I am a little desperate! I have tried getting her to play more and walk more, but she tires out so fast it doesn't seem to help.

Did they do xrays or ultra sounds to see if she's developing fluid or has any masses?

At that rate of gain it sounds like fluid buildup. I'd get her on a trial of Lasix and see if it helped.

That's what I was thinking as well.

We did do xrays just about a week ago and the vet (McIntyre) said she saw no fluid build up. I suppose she could have been wrong? I have a copy of the xray that I will post tomorrow, so everyone can take a look at it. I did specifically ask about fluid build up, which is why we did the xray.
I will ask her about it again when I hear back from her, and will mention the Lasix (sp?)
Thanks so much everyone, I always like to get an outside perspective. Sometimes I worry that I will miss something.

Did Dr. McIntyre have any ideas about what would cause such a rapid severe weight gain?

That's the weird thing, she said she had no idea! We determined it can't really be the food because my other 2 are fine. She said she has no idea what causes such rapid weight gain and that she would have to do some research and ask around. She also said she would call me back once she got some information, but she hasn't yet. She was also looking around at different pricing for ultrasounds for me and said she would get back to me on what she thought would be a good place for ultrasounds.
I will have to post the xray later. I'm pretty busy today dealing with my little sisters' high school graduation preparations.

Just an update for everyone: We still have NO CLUE what is causing Chia to gain so much weight. She gains 100g EVERY WEEK, and has been for about 2 months now! Dr Mcintyre has no clue what the problem could be. I will post pictures below of Chias x-rays from a couple weeks ago, the vet said she did not think that the weight was fluid build-up. She is basically fat everywhere, where as fluid build up would be mainly in the abdomen. We did a blood test in house to check for hyper-thyroid, but it came back normal. Both the vet and I are at a loss as to what could be causing the weight gain. She eats normally, and tries to play normally as well. There haven't been any changes in her environment, her food, or her schedule. I am getting VERY worried, as I don't know what to do to help her lose weight. It is starting to affect her quality of life ![:(](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/sad.GIF) Also, I apologize for the delay in the update. The vets office gave me the wrong file format twice, by accident. ![](http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s422/FamilyOfExotics/21993F05-FE14-42EB-9FE6-7386A19F2430.jpg) ![](http://i1051.photobucket.com/albums/s422/FamilyOfExotics/3DAB149B-4C7B-4ED5-8013-ED7C04B77E8C.jpg) Does anyone have any thoughts? I need some advice on how to help her lose weight, or stop her weight gain. She won't last long otherwise ![:'(](http://www.holisticferretforum.com/images/Ferret_Smilies/tears.GIF) The vet is posting on a vet forum to try and get some second opinions on what her problem might be.

I was going to suggest posting on the Ferret Health List as there are also vets on there.

This is probably a shot in the dark, and probably something that has already been thought of so excuse me if this comes across as stupid lol, but I'm wondering if the combination of meds she is on has one of these listed as a side effect? I wonder if this is potentially a 1 and a million scenario where the medication is causing such adverse effects? Forgive me, I don't recall exactly what she is on currently.
**Edit** - Just went through to see what she is on. Prednisolone has a side effect called Truncal Obesity, mind you it is noted after long term use and your wee one hasn't been on it that long, but I wonder if it's the Pred causing this much of a problem..?
It is also mentioned that short term side effects can cause Mineralocorticoid - which primarily has a lot to do with water retention.
Anyways, that's just me rambling and poking around. I've been following this since the beginning and it has been driving me crazy.

I just posted on the FHL today actually, so I hope I can get some feedback from there.
Its very hard to tell if it could be the medication, because her weight gain actually started a month before we even took her into the vet. It was actually one of the reasons that I decided to bring her in. She had gained a full pound by the time I took her into the vet, and at first i thought it was maybe that she had her seasons reversed!
I knew that weight gain is a side effect of prednisone, but I didn't know about the water retention side effect. I will see if I can call and ask my vet about that! If by some chance it IS the pred, I'm not sure what I could do. If I take her off it, we risk her lymphoma getting worse.
