13 years ago I was working evenings in a long term care center. I was outside having a cigarette on break in -20c weather. Bloody cold. A nurse from another unit came up to me and asked me if I wanted a kitten, 9 weeks old. Having 3 dogs and 3 cats already my answer was no. But when she told me her landlord refused to allow him in the door and he had been living in her car for the last 5 days I asked her to bring him over to me and I'd find him a home. In no way was I leaving a wee baby in a car in that weather. She handed me this adorable little Siamese with a red smudge on his nose and ears
I took him into the nursing home and after making a fuss over him the charge nurse let me leave early to take him home. I had every intention of finding him another home, and in fact DID find him one. But Cliff fell in love with this tiny baby that just wanted to snuggle And the other animals accepted him right away. So here he stayed.
Herne's favourite way of being held was to have his tail and hind legs tucked up and held together in one hand. I think it made him feel more secure. When two or more people were sitting on the sofa he'd climb up on one lap to chest and lay there purring for all of two minutes before going to the next, and then the next and back again
We went back into the nursing home to visit several times
As time went on we realized he simply loved everyone. If we were under the weather he'd be right there. The same with the rest of the cats as well as the dogs. He grew up into a gorgeous adult.
He accepted a baby Watson really easily, but Watson had to be separated so he could actually sleep since Herne constantly woke him up to play.
He was usually to be found with one of his friends.
But Stubbs was his best buddy.
Unfortunately Stubbs is also senile, and can't see well. Evidently he cornered Herne in the basement and attacked. We think he didn't recognize him due to the senility and assumed he was chasing of a strange cat. The injuries weren't bad, and nothing was infected, but Herne's heart was broken. He quit eating and drinking, and was living in absolute terror. Even syringe feeding did nothing for him. He just...quit.
Herne passed peacefully this past Saturday morning.
