My ferret has ear mites, and I just used some olive oil/garlic and a cotton ball. Hoping to get rid of them naturally.I cleaned the outside of the ear, and squeezed some of the excess into the canal. I think I did something wrong, though! My ferret is freaking out, shaking her head, rubbing against the floor and crying. She's NEVER acted like this after cleaning her ears normally. She's scaring me! Is this normal? I can't get ahold of any of my ferret friends, and I discovered your website and hoped someone could help.

It sounds like she had an open sore in her ears. Best bet would be to go to the vet's. I've not bothered trying to treat a mite infestation holistically. I get the ear drops from the vet to take care of them once and for all. All the animals in the house will also have to be treated for them. Out of curiosity- did you use raw garlic? If so, you should get her into the vets. It's toxic for them.

No, of course I wouldn't use raw garlic! My vet actually recommended to try the olive oil/garlic since she's so far away from me right now. She's had other patients use it successfully. The fuzz and I aren't at home now, so I hope it isn't a sore . . . the reason we suspected the mites was the coffee grain look in her ear wax, and a slight smell. She didn't seem bothered until now, though. None of the scratching at the ears or anything. And now she's acting perfectly fine again . . . could it have just been a freak out over something new, or should I start hunting for an emergency vet?

Sometimes they hate getting liquidy things in their ears and will shake their head and rub it on things to try and get it out. Never had any of mine cry though when I put drops in.

I've never been able to put anything in my ferrets ears without them acting like it was acid.
