well it was a cracking litter until nature has decided to intervien it has been blisteringly warm here today and the jill decided enough was enough and decided she wasnt going to nurse them I found three dead and three just hanging on we decided we will try to feed these but I doubt if any will survive one strong hob is feeding well but two jills are struggling we can only try but at three days old the outcome doesnt look good you just have to take the heartbreak with the happiness and snuggle mum because she will soon realise her babies are gone and try again take care bye for now Bev

Hi katt keith is as crazy about ferrets as me lol he is a vet tec and a international ferret judge too ( we work as a team and as partners in everything concerning the ferrets lol ) he has been around them since he was four he is now 28 lol hercs is hanging in there he is sleeping on a heat mat ( well keiths electric blanket with a sheepskin rug on top if I am truthful lol) and keith has given him a tiny teddy as a friend to snuggle up to at the moment he is taking around 0.3mls a feed every hour for now but we are hoping by midnight to get that up a little so he can go every two hours lol he is pooping and peeing fine and screaming his head off when keith does cleaning duties using a cotton bud in warm water lol we have added in a little whipping cream to the krm just to give him that bit extra fat in his milk and he seems to be holding his own so fingers crossed the next 24 hours will tell take care bye for now Bev

Bev, what causes the jill to give up on the litter like this? Is it some instinct related to the weather? Does she think it'll be a bad year to raise her babies? Or is it just simple stress from the weather? Or something else entirely?

I'm so sorry Bev. A strength candle is lit for wee Hercules and for you and Keith. I know the odds of this battle I really hope you can do it. I will also light travelling candles for the wee ones who've decided to journey on. I know that Keith will be devastated about this turn of events. ciao

Really sorry Bev and hope the little guy makes it but we all know the odds. Very tough and sad. I had complications with my Zoey a few weeks ago (Finn's mom) and had to spay her. She had 4 kits that did not survive. It was heartbreaking for me as she is such a wonderful big girl and wanted that litter so bad. I do have a Finn brother and sister though.

Hi In answer to this Bev, what causes the jill to give up on the litter like this? Is it some instinct related to the weather? Does she think it'll be a bad year to raise her babies? Or is it just simple stress from the weather? Yes I think it was simply due to the weather yesterday was hot but she was feeding today was hotter still and she was laying outside only going in once ( I had fans running the mesh doors open and the windows to try and circulate air )I thought this is odd so went back down after an hour as normally she is the type of mum who goes into protective mode and sticks her bum in the entrance to the nest to block it she was still laying outside not bothering so I decided it was time to check inside the nest I found three dead and three just alive so I decided as mum wasn't going to come back to feed them ( maybe she thought its too hot they will die in this heat no matter how much milk I produce because she was drinking loads and producing loads ) two of the remaining jills died and hercs the hob is still going strong its now 11 30pm and he has just been fed fingers crossed he continues as he is doing the weather can cause this heartache heat extreme cold even thunderstorms can all freak out jills its a risk every breeder takes you just pray things work out this is heartache side of breeding nanjferret I am so sorry about zoey that hurts too when you have to take a good breeding jill out of a program after loosing kits shine wont be bred again simply because she is four she hasn't done anything wrong except follow her instincts maybe after loosing the first or the second she decided abandon this litter I will try again I don't know I know deep down it will be a miracle if this little guy makes it but all we can do is try as long as he will fight we will stand in his corner and fight with him thanks everyone for your support take care bye for now Bev

Oh, Nancy...I'm so sorry that you have had an issue with your wee jill. Breeding is not to be taken by the faint of heart. For every successful litter there are so many that don't make it. Candles are lit for all the wee babies who have bounced their way to the bridge is such a short time ciao
