Depends what format you're leaving it in there. I leave whole meat in their cages....it helps to prevent stashing around the rest of the house. I leave it for about 12 hrs. If they've not eaten it by then, it gets fed to the dog (natures garbage disposal ). Ferrets won't eat meats that their system cannot handle. I do find they don't like dried out ground mixes, so that has to be changed up sooner. Prey you can actually leave for almost a whole day (24 hrs) ciao

I leave smaller pieces about 12 hours, larger ones up to 24 hours, and whole prey up to 48. If the bacterial count gets too high for them they won't touch it anyway

This also really helped me with being nervous about them going without food all day until i was home to feed again through the switch. Great to know that it can be left in the cage with them for some time

Oh that thing It's been making the rounds. I do have to wonder who on the FDA has been bought. All it's doing is reiterating wash your hands and surfaces as per normal after fixing raw meat

I agree with Sherry. That article to me is just basic knowledge when it comes to safe food handling. Like don't touch your mouth after handling raw pet food. .. ha. Don't let this scare you, it's no different than preparing your own meat. I do use bleach water to disinfect my kitchen a few times a week but would do this if I feed raw or not. However the article says not to let your raw feed animal "kiss" you and I say pooey to that! I do and will continue to. lol. I can't turn down my ferret kisses! But maybe that's just me.

I actually gave Willow a kiss on the end of the snout without thinking a few days ago right after feeding her. Got a mouth full of raw turkey soup, and still here

In microbiology we learned that it takes a few hundred thousand of salmonella organism to cause sickness...don't remember the actual number but still just makes you think of the people that have gotten sick from it that you would probably be able to tell hey don't eat this

The other thing about this article that bothers me is it is comparing raw pet food to kibble. Where is the raw human grade foods? Im sure they have salmonella etc... should we avoid eating meats (because we have to handle them raw before we cook them...) Some people will say anything to try to prevent people from feeding raw.
