I can't find any legislation on why breeding ferrets is illegal in Michigan. Does anyone know? Am I just not looking hard enough?
I don't plan on breeding(I actually want to open a shelter in Lansing. One where the care taker doesn't lie about ailments!), I am just curious. My breeder friend Amanda asked(mostly lizards, sugar gliders, and hedgehogs) me and I couldn't answer her.

Just wondering why you think they are illegal to breed there?

Not sure about there but I was at the pet store and a guy saw 2 of mine that were with me and was saying he moved here from MA, that he had a litter with him and was told by the vet they aren't allowed to breed in Virginia either, the pet store owner heard us and said something about licensing for all ferrets in va being owned or something by someone, not sure as .i was in a hurry to get home. It does explain however why I couldn't locate any breeders here

I'm pretty sure that intact ferrets are illegal in MA, rdaniels would know the situation best as he lives there and has intact ferrets and I think was having trouble finding a vet to do the fixing surgery. From what I read of legislation online, it's not illegal to breed ferrets in MI as long as you meet their guide lines as a "hobby breeder" (under 5 breeding pairs) and their health standards. If you want to start serious breeding to sell or have a lot of ferrets, you need a pet store or similar licenses I think.

Nanjferret- All the legislation I have found said some such nonesense about not breeding or was vague about breeding and the way it was written made it sound illegal. What I could find was not helpful and led me to believe that it is illegal to breed.
Yurei Avalon- Thanks. I will have to do a little research into "Hobby Breeding" and let my friend know. Like I said, we are just curious as to why we can't find much information, and I really don't want to breed ferrets myself. I would much rather rescue. Too many monsters need homes for me to be OK with breeding.

Hi, hobby breeding is usually allowed, it gets complicated when it is a large venture such as something like Marshall Farms. Then there are strict regulations. All ferrets sold in a "commercial" pet store must be spayed or neutered. There are some places where owning ferrets is still illegal, such as in California, but in general breeding on a small scale is fine.
