Some of the enclosures you guys have for your ferrets are just amazing! Looking through these pictures all I could think to myself is Challenge accepted! I cant wait until we get moved and settled so we can start on one for our babies!
Wow. The enclosures on here are amazing and so well thought out. I decided to make mine 2 years ago. My fuzzies used to live indoors when I had a bigger house. We had a spare room that they used to have free roam of. So when we down sized we had one spare room that we couldn't keep our guys in as we had people staying around quite often and as everyone here know not every one shares the same love we do. In fact none of my family and friends share the same love lol.
I decided to make out enclosure out our back garden bolted onto the side of my concrete shed.
This is the hutch I bought to build around. This would be there sleeping area and dark area to cool down in the summer months.
I then Doug the ground where I wanted to put our concrete slabs. I made the decision on concrete for a couple of reasons. I could bolt the frame to the ground for security. We have a few dodgy people living our street and didn't want to temp fate. Easy to clean up i can get in there with a jet wash an blast the slabs. Also means that if any water does get in there it drains pretty well and does not get bogged.
Then I started to build the frame. To be fair I made no plans. Only one pretty crude drawing of the basic shape. I then just made the frame and added support until I couldn't move it with my hands. The tarp on the hutch was to stop any dust or dirt getting into the hutch. It also used to block the sun on the top level of the hutch so they could get some sleep in the dark.
Then finally I added mesh all the way around the top half of the hutch. Made a door on the side for easy access. Then I used feather edge fencing to secure the bottom. Rather than nails I used screws for every thing. This made it a little more time consuming but far more secure for the ferrets trying to get out and any other animals trying to get in. We have had a terrier come into the garden and claw at the mesh to no avail and my jack Russell saw him off aswell.
As you can see the roof is see through. I have changed this now however again for a couple of reasons. It becomes very brittle from cold to hot weather. It gets very warm inside the hutch during summer. My eldest girl gwen would not come out from under the hutch in the day as she was frightened of predators above her. Hope you guys like my hutch. I will get a few pics of the inside for you guys too. I also have another coop outside for my other group. These are my younger 2. Gwen my eldest Jill will not let them live with her yet. But we are working on this. I will also get some pics of this for you guys.
So I just went out and took a few more pics of the inside of my enclosure and the other enclosure. Now my two youngest are running a mock in the living room. They have just hit adalesence and are now trying our patience again by biting and acting up lol.
Wow! All of these pics are amazing. I have been wanting to do some kind of outdoor play area for the fur kids. I love seeing their poofy little tails when they get to play outside but it gets to be a lot trying to keep them from getting into everything even when on their harnesses. Hopefully the hubby will be willing to dust off his nail gun soon =)
I have numerous outdoor enclosures. Am just waiting for some quotes for some custom made 8ft x 2.5ft hutches as I would rather give more space. In the future am going to have a 15ft x 20ft (ish) shed/garage/summerhouse to put all of my enclosures into so that I can just open the pens and let them out to run around rather than having to put them all in a carrier and bring them in but that is a job for this coming year.
This is my custom made shed 10ft x 6ft - on the left there is a 6ft x 2.5ft 3 tier pen and a 6ft x 3.5ft 3 tier pen on the right.
This is the right side ...
The left side (bit bare in this photo!)
Syd's little outdoor house, where he lives with Snowy and Henry
A 6ft x 2ft block of hutches
The patio currently ... with the summer pens on the far left (too open really to be used in winter ....)
