So Koda's Lurpon is wearing off. He is due for another shot or the implant around the 2-4th of the month. His first shot was March 3rd. Well, I called the vet to see about setting up an appointment and she is out of town until the 7th! And I work all weekend, so I can't get in until the 11th! I will talk to her about what we need to do to get the implant when she gets back, and whether we need to do another Lurpon or two, or can go straight to Des (we got it yaaay!!!! I t is *supposed* to be in by now but I haven't heard back). And if we do Des we need to get bloodwork etc done. I had to peel Koda off Kenai the night before last night, and again last night. Will it do him harm physiologically to get the next shot/implant that belated? Also, does the return of his bad behavior as the shot wears off mean that it is almost for sure Adrenal instead of just Spring Fever?

I don't know that the extra week will make a huge difference bc i've seen it wear off after 3 weeks and I always did it once a month. my vet has also gone out of town and so the lupron was not always on schedule. in a perfect world it would be. are you giving him melatonin? if not, i would give him oral melatonin 1.5 mg a day. it may help the symptoms until you can get the lupron or des into him. (curious) why does your vet want to do blood tests prior to implanting him with deslorelin?

I think because hormones will effect his natural hormone balance and she ants a baseline to go off of before we start doing intensive treatments like the implant, pred (has been an option IF needed for his IBD), etc. Does human melatonin work? And what times do I give it? My schedule is iffy so I might not always be able to do it exactly on time.

I'd look into the melatonin implant. Last 3-4 months. That way you don't have to worry about the timing.

To be honest, I've had to wait for the lupron, and the only one it made a difference with was Sinnead. Zeus and Athena did fine waiting the extra week, in spite of a resurgence of the adrenal symptoms. If you have to wait- just go with the des. For the oral melatonin, it works best if given around 7-9 hours after sunrise, but can still be effective(if less so) if given around the same time every day(no matter the time)

I've been off a couple times on Pip's lupron, forgot one time, pharmacy didn't ship when I thought they would, etc, I didn't have any problems with his symptoms returning due to it. He is showing issues again now so I got this months shot with upped dosage and then he's getting des on teh 15th, I wasn't sure about the doubling up on hormones but the des seems like it takes awhile to kick in anyways. Also both of my adrenals are hardcore with the humping right now, I had to go out and buy some diaper rash creme which seems to be helping but dang they stink! They smell like babies, gross! ;D It was that or break them all up though. So it very well might just be springtime hormones, mine are not usually this bad at all and now it's all they want to do when they get around another ferret.

i used to give my ferret the melatonin for humans. i bought it aqt walgreens pharmacy. i would divide it. at first i would give .5 in the morning and .5 when i got home from work which was like 9 hours later. but then i increased it to .75 mg in the a.m. and .75 p.m. then i just got him the melatek implant which lasts 3 to 4 months depending on what vet you ask. the melatonin tablets dissolve quickly in water. i have seen the 1 mg and 3 mg tablets at walgreens.

I always use store melatonin. I use .3mls I found that it did little to stay sexual aggressiveness. At least it didn't appear to help either Lady"B" or Captain Jack. It appears to work more cosmetically, keeping the coat thick and maintaining appetite. ciao

i used melatonin alone on Lemmy for the first two years after his official diagnosis of adrenal disease. it worked great. it stopped his aggression and he was back to being his sweet self. it depends on the tumor. it seems that all adrenal tumors respond differently to different meds.

I agree totally. I guess I can't say it didn't help, both Captain Jack and Lady "B" were diagnosed on other symptoms, the sexual aggression may have appeared later as the melatonin's purpose was starting to wear off. Captain Jack was on Melatonin for almost a year before the whole sexual thing started, perhaps it was indeed helping suppress this. Lady "B" was a whole series of problems and she didn't appear to respond to the melatonin. So far the only thing she's responded to was the Des implant. I agree totally, some ferrets depending on the tumour growth respond differently to the various methods. Mad Max responded to the melatonin for almost 2 yrs, but didn't respond to lupron at all. Pooka responded to the melatonin for almost 2 yrs. Nicodemus didn't last 6 months and responded to none of the possible solutions. ciao
