I really want to open the window in the ferret room to give them some natural air and smells. However, I can already tell they're going to scratch it, tear it. I want to cover the screen so that they can't scratch it. I really don't want the screen to be ruined, but I'm more worried about an escape.

Is there a way to make it so that they can't reach it? It is indeed a very real fear as Odin made his escape looking for lovelies, out a bathroom screen in his previous home. I have the window open in the ferret room all the time, they don't seem to give it much mind. Fun-Go did to begin with and I find that they usually do for the first couple of days but after that they don't seem to pay any attention to it. It's the same as the large patio doors. It's a pain the first couple of days but they soon get used to it and make do with watching the birds on the deck (chipmunks are a bit of a larger temptation ) ciao

Unfortunately, I can't block off the window. they can reach it easily. I was thinking about hardwire cloth, but I'm not sure how that'd work

I'll have to look into hardwire cloth. The air is so nice and refreshing and they enjoy looking at the little lizards on the window sill, I hate to take it away. They look so sad when the window gets closed

Ohhh do let us know what you end up doing. Jack and Brady LOVE when the windows are open. Jack will sit in the window and watch the birds and lizards much like a cat. But then sometimes they decide the window sill is a good place to wrestle eachother or an even better place to climb. Of course, all I can imagine is them somehow pushing the screen out and them falling two stories

I opened it for a trial run to see how much interested they had it in and Trixie already started scratching it much like a scratching post. So I know there will be holes in no time. I will see if I can find out how to make it safe. I thought with hardwire you have to use zip ties to secure it?

Hm I just got an idea. In case the hardwire cloth doesnt work, what about a piece of plexiglass with holes lots of holes drilled in it? A very thin piece that lays on the screen.

Why not remove the screen(with the window being closed after of course!), take it in to a hardware store, and see about them replacing the regular screen with the hardware cloth?

Hm, that might work. I am not sure if the screen is removable (I'm definitely not handy ;D ) But I will take a look and see if I can do that instead.

Remove your window, and it's possible your screen might have a tab at the bottom and top, just pull on these to release it. It can sometimes take some tugging ;D

Thanks for that - sounds very promising. Unfortunately, I'll probably have to ditch the screen idea until winter. When I install the window AC unit for summer, I'll have to completely remove the screen and insulate the remaining window opening. Though it would be helpful to have that super screen for when winter comes around and I can take the unit out.

I found that the ferrets could bite/dig a hole in the window screen in seconds, so I bought pet screening online and installed it in the screen frame myself. It was a pain, but a whole lot cheaper than taking it in to be done. Just make sure that the ferrets can't push the screen out of the window frame.
