hey everybody, im paranoid now and think Marcellus and dax are waardys, if I was to send some pics what should they be of (front profile, side, etc), and how can anybody tell if there deaf? I assumed they were ignoring me just because theyre being ferrets, Marcellus is pretty playful, but dax is always real lazy laidback and floppy hes like holding a puddle, neither of them react to me trying to play, they just get all offended and stare at me * but Marcellus will bounce and play with the baby novak, UGH im getting all flustered trying to figure these boys out, someone help!! (headwall)

Squeak a squeaky toy behind them when they're interested in something else, and see if they react.

Don't worry about them being a Waardy or not...it's not important...really Being deaf isn't that important either....they handle it a lot better than we do. If you want to try and test them, one of you hold them and the other operate a squeaky toy beyond their sight line. Squeak the toy...if they notice it or turn to it (and not toward you because you've come up behind them)then they can hear. Ferrets are very good at ignoring their people and deafies can tell your there by feeling the vibration of your step when you walk. It's really not that important, you've already got them, you love them and they love you. That's the important part of the equation, not if they can hear or if they're "special". Take some pics and we will see if we can tell by the shape of their heads and their markings but even that's not infallible. It's only a best guess . ciao

It's great that you posted this!! I had to google it all on my own when I got my ferrets, and I'm glad that I was correct in my research. I haven't had any of my ferrets tested (waste of money, I won't love them or change their environment if I knew for sure), but I'm pretty sure all three fall on the spectrum. Lou has the panda coloring and red eyes and is deaf, but no other signs of Waard. He is extremely intelligent and has a normal gait. Chip is a full blown Waardy, hands down. He's got the blaze and the mitts, the head shape, the odd gait (although we also think he has some nerve damage from getting de-scented, as his back legs and tail don't work properly), he's deaf, and he is definitely lacking in the intelligence department. However, he is also the cuddliest of the three, the sweetest, and we absolutely can't resist his adorable face even when he bites our toes and pees just outside the litter box. Baltimore also has a blaze, is hard of hearing (but not quite deaf), has mitts, and has the blockier head shape. However, he is extremely intelligent just like Lou.
All three definitely fall on different parts of the spectrum, but I love them all so much, it doesn't matter. Although I wish they didn't have Waard, I wouldn't trade them for anything.

I'm not an expert though. Just there's no stripes on their head or mitts, or other physical signs that I can see.
Did you make a thread about Dax? Or is this about him being floppy? Weird that they both look at you 'offended' if you try to play! If anything, waardy babies seem to looove playing.
lol yeah mine doesn't listen to me ever. They're like cats.

Marcellus *might* be. He's a sable mitt by the way, not a panda Pandas have fully white heads going back to the shoulders, with maybe a couple small splashes of colour behind the ears. Dax is a regular sable

I was just looking at the photos and thought that Marcellos might be a waardy. That front on does make it appear to be so, eye set. He does have a brow though. The colours would point to a possible issue. As I mentioned, it's not really important. It's now so deeply ingrained in the farm ferrets that colour is no longer an indicator. What has become important is finding waardys in breeding stock. This is going to be an issue for any of the breeders who are breeding for colour. They know the tricks and what to look for but this is where it becomes a pure science and the reason why it should never be left to just anyone who would like to give it try. ciao
