I finally thought to capture a video of Miss Emily with fur stuck in her throat. Poor girl goes through this every shedding season. Lucrezia was the same way for the longest time. Even though the coughing sounds harsh, it really is just fur caught. What helps her is giving her some oil, followed by a bit of lax, followed by a syringe of water.

This is exactly what Xanthee does, but she does it at least once a day, and its winter here, so she's not shedding, I can't work out why she does it

Yep, typical nasty ferert cough. It is so scary when you hear it. @mikaylamason you might want to get her checked out by a vet as coughing can be a sign of heart issues. My Wilma does this when she stashes meat and it dries out to the point of being inedible. She eats it anyhow and has to vomit it back up. I have to be very vigilant about seeking out her stashes to prevent this.

Emily only does this either when in the cage(have to change bedding twice a week at this point), or when snuggled in with the others in a sleeping den. Basically she is very sensitive to fur when she winds up getting it in her throat. These episodes will be over when shedding season is past. She does this a few times a day right now. The main reason I posted it is so others can hear just how harsh this actually can sound. If I don't catch her early enough when she starts she begins to panic and will actually throw up. At that point I use rescue remedy to calm her a bit then follow through with the oil, etc.

Mikaylamasan- how dry is the air where you are right now? Some ferrets are also sensitive to that, and when the mucous membranes start to dry in the throat they start coughing. In those cases a humidifier can help a lot.

it's very very humid where I live, so I don't think that's a problem. As soon as I run down to their room though, she just stops and looks at me like nothing's wrong, then keeps running around playing

Poor baby When LittleMomma does that she gets so upset and tries to run away from it, the first couple times it scared the holy heck out of me. She would cough then scramble like heck then cough and run again tryin to hide.

Katiesue- I just use either salmon oil or fish oil. Libby- something that will help if she is getting stressed out is to use a drop of rescue remedy dabbed on the nose. It takes effect a bit faster that way and helps calm them before reaching the point of vomiting.

I haven't tried it on their noses yet but I will, seems that their sheds have slowed back down for the season but I'll def. keep this in mind when the next mass shed starts again

MY little man has been doing this for the last 10 minutes.. Unsure of why.. In the past he has done it in his cage but it does not happen all the time.. and sometimes just out of the blue a few times here and there. Any ideaS?
p.s. also today he did get stuck in a spot that he couldnt get out of.. and ended up with a little bloody nose.. nothing horrible..

Can something like neosporin be used besides vaseoline? or A + D ointment

Given that the Vaseline is taken internally, no.

Oh my gosh, how have I not seen this video before?!! That is EXACTLY the awful cough I have been hearing coming from the ferret room for the past year!! Finally figured out it was Sophie doing it. And it is totally only when she has been sleeping inside a sleeping bag or cube with other furry ferrets. Wow this makes me so happy! And feel so silly at the Same time
