I got two male ferrets about 2 months ago from a young girl; Iggy, who is apparently 3 years old and Badger who is 2. They were eating marshals brand kibble and had an abundance of the cheap, terrible treats in with the items i got with them. I switched their kibble to a mixture of wellness core grain free and orijen. I was in the process of adding another and contemplating going raw.. Offering raw food here and there but neither were interested.
Badger loves this new kibble and will lay in front of the bowl gobbling it up. Iggy has never really eaten a lot of it.. I often wondered if he preferred the softer kibble that Marshall's offered.
Anyways, this week we have been noticing that Iggy is looking thin and his fur is shedding, not patchy however. I contemplated if this could be seasonal. He also hasn't been playing this week and had been begging for people food and has been taking raw chicken pieces, which was odd for him. Upon inspection i noticed that one of his eye teeth looks sore. Ive made an appointment with the vet and am hoping this is the problem....
So in a panic, thinking hes been starving i found a texture of food he will eat, and not cart away and stash.. A patte, like wet cat food texture. Ive been using the food processor to do a large chicken breast, 2 chicken hearts, a chicken liver, about 2 tsp of powdered egg shells, about 4 tablespoons of minced beef and have added about a tsp of suet to every serving to increase the fat. Ive also been adding a bit of go! Grain free wet canned vat food and a tiny bit of the ferretone, since he likes the flavour, but have been slowly decreasing both so i can eventually get rid of them altogether.
I have been researching like crazy and reading what i can to try to get it right. Hes perking up and was playing today a bit and Ive noticed his body temp is warmer and his belly is bigger...
Does this sound OK? Please tell me what to alter to make it great. Ive been offering chicken necks as well but hes stashing those instead of eating them..
Also, badger has been trying the food too so that's great. Id like to switch to raw for both but for now getting Iggy fatter and healthier is my priority.
Thanks so much, sorry its so long and hopefully not many spelling mistakes as I'm at work, sneaking on my tablet to ask :-P,
Stacy
